Lost to th' esteem of all the worldly wise,
He's poor indeed to their contracted eyes;
By self to ev'ry nobler passion steel'd,
But adding house to house, and field to field;
Riches must still into their coffers flow,
While want may pine, and death succeed to wo.
Retir'd from those, he fed on stores within;
Reflection view'd the wrecks produc'd by sin;
One sov'reign balm for human woes he knew,
And where affliction languish'd, oft he flew;
Led to some promise that might cheer the soul,
And pray'd his God to make the wounded whole;
Then when he saw the smile of peace return,
And friendship soothe the soul long used to mourn,
His bosom thrill'd with heav'nly, pure, delight,

Another's joy to him a pleasant sight.

He lov'd to work; and health appear'd to say,
There yet remain'd a long and useful day;
But God design'd for him a blest reward,
He saw his soul for purer joys.prepar'd;
Unknown to him, the word on high was giv'n,
The angei death convey'd his soul to Heav'n.

Oh, Caldwell' hearts that closely twin'd with thine,
Communing oft with thee on things divine;
Who found thee pious, friendly, honest, pure,
Where confidence repos'd might rest secure,
Lament thy loss; and often sigh to join
Thy ransom'd spirit in its joys divine.
New-York, March, 1819.

MR. CALDWELL WAS A

Director of the New-York Missionary Society,

Director of the United Foreign Missionary Society,

Director of the Religious Tract Society,

AMICUS.

Director of the Society for the Support of the Gospel among the poor,
Director of the American Bible Society,

A Trustee of the New-York Free School,

Corresponding Secretary of the New-York Bible Society,

and a Member of the Board of Missions of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church.

He also superintended the printing of the French New Testament published by the New-York Bible Society. He did the same for the French and Spanish New Testaments afterwards published by the American Bible Society, correcting the press and the Stereotype plates, in those languages, as well as for the several editions of the Bible in the English language. He was master of the French, Spanish, Latin, and Greek languages, and an excellent gramarian and critic.

He undertook the publication of the Christian Herald, chiefly, perhaps solely with the view of communicating in an easy and familiar way to the friend's of Zion the glorious things that were accomplishing for her prosperity. In so doing, there is reason to believe he has gladdened the hearts of many who had been wishing for such a medium of communication. Similar publications have since been commenced, and are producing good effects.

THE CHILD OF MERCY.

How blest the child of mercy lives,
Whose feet pursue the sacred road;
While faith increasing pleasure gives,
His soul reposes in his God.

Not monarchs, deck'd in regal state,
Can with this favour'd being vie
With joys divine his heart, elate,
Pants for unmingled bliss on high.

When low'ring tempests, fraught with
Appal the sinner's heart with fear, [harm,
His faith can gloomy fears disarm,
And sweetly whispers, Christ is here.

Oh! could I live on Jesus too,

No more should doubts my heart distress ; |

I'd smile at death with courage true,
And boast the Saviour's righteousness.
Hark! his all gracious voice invites
Each ruin'd sinner to his throne;
What thrilling joys, what rich delights,
For those who trust in him alone.

Shine! Sun of Righteousness, and dart
Thy beams of love and mercy down;
These earthly lights will then depart,
Their lustre lost in thy renown.

Yes! Mighty God, if thou appear,
My soul to earth shall cleave no more,
But mount above its little sphere;
Gaze still on thee, and still adore.
