that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let him eat of that bread, and let a man examine himself, and so eateth and drinketh unworthily, drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are many sleep. For if we would weak and sickly among you, and judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

1. PARABLES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.

ROYAL BRAMBLE. Judges ix, 8-15. The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us. But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? And the trees said to the fl-tree, Come thou, and reign over us. But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees? Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us. And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us. And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

EWE LAMB.

2 Sam. xii, 1-7. And the LORD sent Nathan unto David: and he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds; But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up and it

grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. there came a traveller unto the And rich man; and he spared to take of his own flock, and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him. And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: And he shall restore the lamb four-fold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul.

LIONESS.

A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions. whelps: it became a young lion, And she brought up one of her and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men. And and he laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring. Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him: he was taken in their pit. And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Babylon: they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.

CHRIST'S PARABLES. Matth. xili, 10-13, 34, 35, 53. And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance; but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing, see not; and hearing, they hear not; neither do they understand. things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.

Mark iv, 2. 33, 34. And he

taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

Luke viii, 4, And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable.

2.PARABLES IN THE NEW

TESTAMENT.

THE TWO FOUNDATIONS. Matth. vii, 24-27. Therefore, of mine, and doeth them, I will whosoever heareth these sayings liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock; And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that hear

eth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the saud; And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

TARES.

Matth. xiii, 24-30. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? from whence then bath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest, while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.

MUSTARD SEED.

Luke xiii, 18, 19. Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? It is like a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

LEAVEN.

Matth. xiii, 33. Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

TREASURE FOUND.

Matth. xiii, 44. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that

field.

FISHING.

Matth. xlil, 47, 48. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.

DEBTORS AND CREDITORS.

Matth. xviii, 23-34. Therefore

is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents: But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant there fore fell down and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the Lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence; and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat,

saying, Pay me that thou owest.

And his fellow-servant fell down

at his feet, and besought him,
saying, Have patience with me,
and I will pay thee all. And he
would not; but went and cast him
into prison, till he should pay the
debt.
So when his fellow-ser-
Vants saw what was done, they
were very sorry, and came and
told unto their lord all that was
done. Then his lord, after that
he had called him, said unto him,
O thou wicked servant, I forgave

thee all that debt, because thou
desiredst me: Shouldest not thou
also have had compassion on thy
fellow-servant, even as I had pity
on thee? And his lord was wroth,
and delivered him to the tormen-
tors, till he should pay all that
was due unto him.

DAY LABOURERS.

Matt. xx, 1-16. For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a-day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, And he said unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsover is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did

sir; and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, the first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go ito the kingdom of God before you.

MARRIAGE FEAST.

Matt. xxii, 1-14. And Jes answered, and spake unto them again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unts a certain king, which made a riage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that wer bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, be sect forth other servants, saying, Tel them which are bidden, Bebol I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fatlings are kille and all things are ready; on unto the marriage. But th made light of it, and went ther ways, one to his farm, another ta likewise. And about the eleventh his merchandise. And the res hour he went out, and found nant took his servants, and et others standing idle, and saith treated them spitefully, and th unto them, Why stand ye here all them. And when those servants went out into the they came that were hired about highways, and gathered togethe the eleventh hour, they received all, as many as they found, every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thon agree with me for a penny? Take that thine ts, and go thy way: I will give unto this last even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

THE TWO SONS.

Matt. xxi, 28-31. But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to-day in my vineyard. He anwered and said, I will not: but afterwards he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go,

bad and good; and the wedding

was furnished with guests. A when the king came in to see guests, he saw there a man what had not on a wedding garm And he saith unto him. Friet how camest thou in hither having a wedding garment?
