eth such to worship him. God is a Spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” The woman saith unto him, “ I know that the Messiah cometh, who is called Christ; when he is come, he will tell us all things.” Jesus saith unto her, “ I that speak unto thee am he.”
Upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman; yet no man said, “ What seekest thou? or why talkest thou with her ?”
The woman then left her water-pot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, “ Come and see a man that told me all things that ever I did; is not this the Christ?” Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying “ Master, eat.” But he said unto them, “ I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” Therefore said the disciples one to another, “ Hath any man brought him aught to eat?” Jesus saith unto them, “ My meat is to do the will
of Him that sent me, and to finish his work."
Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, on the testimony of the woman who said, “ He told me all that ever I did.” When therefore the Samaritans were come to him, they besought him that he would tarry with them; and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word; and they said to the woman, “ Now we believe, not because of what thou hast said, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.”
There was a great dispute between the Jews and the Samaritans, as to the place in which they were to worship God: the Samaritans said that it was the mountain called Gerizim, and there they had built a temple; but the Jews more truly said, that the place appointed by God for his worship was Jerusalem. When, there
fore, the woman of Samaria perceived, by his knowledge of her past life, that Jesus was a prophet, she thought she would ask him to tell her who were in the right, her countrymen or the Jews, about the place where they ought to worship. Jesus, however, did not think it necessary to tell her this; but he informed her that the time was near at hand, when it would not any longer be of consequence whether they worshiped God in that mountain or at Jerusalem, for that the true worshipers were they who worshiped God in spirit and in truth, and this they might do in any place, wherever they happened to be. “ God," said he, “ is a spirit;" he dwelleth not in temples made with hands, neither is he to be worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing. He is every where present; and if we do but address ourselves to him, with a sincere mind and an humble and earnest spirit, he will hear us.
THE CURE OF THE NOBLEMAN'S SON
(John iv. 46–53.) Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick, at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
Then said Jesus unto him, “ Unless ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.” The nobleman saith unto him, “ Sir, come down ere my child die.” Jesus saith unto him, “ Go thy way; thy son liveth.” And he believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, “ Thy son liveth.” Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend;
and they said unto him, “ Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in which Jesus had said unto him, “ Thy son liveth ;” and he himself believed, and his whole house.
THE CALL OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES. (Luke v. 1-11; Matt. ix. 9, x. 2–4; Mark iii.
13—19; Luke vi. 12–16.) And it came to pass, as the people pressed on him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesareth, and saw two vessels at anchor near the shore of the lake; and the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the vessels, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would push out a little from the land, And he sat down, and taught the people out of the vessel.
