that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same will betray me. The Son of Man goeth, as it is written of him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! it would have been better for that man if he had not been born." Then Judas, who betrayed him, said also, "Master, is it I?" Jesus said unto him, "Thou hast said."*

Then Judas went out, and when he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. My little children, I have now but a little time to be with you. Ye will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, 'Whither I go, ye cannot come,' so now I say to you. A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love

one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

Simon Peter saith unto him, "Lord, whither goest thou?" Jesus answered him, "Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now, but thou wilt follow me afterwards." Peter said unto him, "Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake." Jesus answered him, "Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice!" But he spake the more vehemently, "Though I should die with thee, yet will I never deny thee." Likewise also said they all.

And as they were eating, Jesus took the bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take, eat; this is my body, which is given [broken] for you: this do in remembrance of me." After the same

manner, when he had taken the cup, and given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."

Jesus here directs his disciples to take bread and to eat it, in remembrance of his body being broken for their sakes. So did he also direct them to drink wine, as a sign or symbol which would remind them of his blood, which was shed on the cross, for the salvation of men. The new covenant, or agreement, here spoken of, is that which was established between God and man, by the mission, death, and resurrection of Christ.

THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE.
(Matt. xxvi. 36-56; Luke xxii. 51.)

THEN Went Jesus with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said unto them, "Stay ye here, while I go

and pray yonder." And he took with him Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee; and he began to be sorrowful and oppressed with grief. Then said he unto them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death; stay ye here, and watch with me."

And he went a little farther, and fell on his face and prayed, saying, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt." And he returned unto the disciples, and finding them asleep, he said unto Peter, "What! could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, "O my Father! if this cup may not pass away from me except I drink it, thy will be done." And he came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. And

he left them and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then came he to the disciples, and said to them, "Do ye still sleep, and take your rest? Lo, the hour is at hand, when the Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Arise, let us be going; lo, he is at hand, that betrayeth me."

While he was yet speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude, with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him, had given them a sign, saying, " Whomsoever I shall kiss, the same is he; lay hold of him." And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, "Hail, Master," and kissed him. Jesus said unto him, "Friend! wherefore art thou come?" Then they came, and, laying hands on Jesus, seized him.

And behold, one of those who were with Jesus, stretched forth his hand, and
