in passages wholly taken from Scripture divided into portions for the six days of the week,—with prayers suited to each portion.

MONDAY NOON.

Christian holiness enforced from a consideration of the several parts of our baptismal vow.

1. That we renounce the devil, and all his works.

HE that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil'.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom may devour whom resist stedfast in the faith 2. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you3.

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices 5.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood; but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breast-plate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet 3 Jam. iv. 7.

of salvation; and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance.

2. That we renounce the pomps and vanities of this wicked world.

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world: if any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him: for all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world 2.

Christ gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God, and our Father 3.

For ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him Who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light".

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world 5.

Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly 6.

Enter not into the path of the wicked: and go not into the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it;

turn from it, and pass away".

And be not conformed to this world.

For what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness'?

3. That we renounce all the sinful lusts of the flesh. Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the spirit is spirit'.

And they that are after the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the spirit, the things of the spirit: for to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace; because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then, they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if ye through the spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live 3.

For the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust to the day of judgment to be punished; but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness *.

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul 5.

Let us walk honestly as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying: but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour: not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God 7.

For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people: wherefore come out from among them, and be ye

separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty'.

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit; perfecting holiness in the fear of God2. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God3.

4. That we believe all the articles of the Christian Faith.

He that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him 1.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved 5,

Jesus cried and said, he that believeth on Me, believeth not on Me, but on Him That sent Me 6.

Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father; but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you which ye have heard from the beginning: if that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

And we have seen, and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 8.

In Whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 9.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our

inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory'.

Therefore let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for He is faithful That promised 2.

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write to you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints 3.

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men,

be strong.

Stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the Gospel".

Continue in the faith, grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard.

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus 7.

5. That we keep God's holy will and commandments.

This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men 8.

But what doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith, save him?

Thou believest that there is one God; thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead 10
