PREFACE.

Ir is with mingled feelings that we introduce the present volume to our readers. Though its contents are far from being destitute, both of variety and interest, yet we regret to think that the financial condition of the Society and its increasing claims, have imposed upon us the necessity of considerably reducing our periodical. But necessity has no law. And till the resources of the Institution are very much augmented, we must be satisfied with a comparatively limited publication.

Nor is this all. We have yet a deeper solicitude for the Society itself. The Institution is second to none in value and importance. Its object is simple and scriptural-its aim lofty and divine—the present and eternal welfare of the British sailor. We therefore renew our appeal. We need the aid of the whole church of Christ.

Enlightened and christian benevolence has done much for man—much for the land in which we live-much for the world at large. It has reared in our midst those charitable institutions which stand like so many splendid pillars, at once the support and ornament of the social fabric. It has done more. It is at this moment pouring a flood of light and truth over a dark, benighted, and ignorant population. It has erected that great platform on which the plan of modern mis
