LA SAINT-NICOLAS.

De même que la Sainte-Catherine est la fête des jeunes personnes, la Saint-Nicolas est celle des enfans. Quoique l'habitude de la fêter soit maintenant négligée, on se souvient encore qu'autrefois c'était une fête de famille. Long-temps d'avance, les parens engageaient leurs enfans à être sages, et vienne la StNicolas tu en seras récompensé, disaient-ils. En effet, dès le réveil, chacun d'eux trouvait sur son lit, les jouets, les gâteaux que le saint avait apporté pendant la nuit. Ceux qui n'avaient pas voulu tenir compte de l'avis, en étaient punis; rien d'agréable ne s'offrait à leurs yeux, quelquefois même une poignée de verges se trouvait placée dans leur soulier.

La servante paraît jouir du chagrin un peu niais occasioné à l'un des enfans par la vue de ces verges, tandis que la grand' mère, voulant faire cesser les pleurs, s'approche du lit dont elle tire le rideau, et fait signe à son petit-fils de venir la trouver, afin d'avoir aussi son cadeau. A droite, on voit le père indiquant à deux de ses enfans que le saint est venu et reparti par la cheminée. L'éducation que reçoivent maintenant les enfans les empêcherait de croire à de semblables contes; mais le peintre Jean Steen a représenté avec beaucoup de justesse une scène qui rappelle l'esprit de son siècle.

Ce tableau est maintenant au Musée d'Amsterdam; il a été fort bien gravé par Jean de More.

THE FESTIVAL OF ST. NICHOLAS.

In the same manner as St. Catherine's day is the festival of young girls, so, on the continent, the anniversary of St. Nicholas, is also that of boys. Although the custom is now much neglected, still it is yet remembered, that formerly it was a family festival. For a long time previous, parents induced their children to be good, by promising they should be rewarded, come St. Nicholas day. In fact, each boy on awaking found upon his bed, the playthings, or the cakes which the Saint had conveyed thither during the night. Those who had been heedless of advice were punished for it, as nothing agreeable offered itself to their sight whilst sometimes a rod was found in one of their shoes.

The maid servant appears to enjoy the rather silly grief, felt by one the boys, at the sight of the rod, but his grand mo. ther willing to dry up his tears, goes near the bed of which she draws the curtain aside, making a sign to her grandson to come to her, that he also may have a gift. On the right hand, the father is seen, showing to two of his children, that the Saint came and went away again by the chimney. The education now given to children would prevent their believing similar tales yet the painter Jan Steen, has represented, with great accucacy, a scene, that recals the spirit of his age.

LE TORRENT.

Au milieu du jour, et cherchant à s'abreuver, des bestiaux arrivent près d'une chute d'eau qui sort avec fracas des trous d'un rocher, et devient bientôt tranquille sur une partie plate où quelques femmes sont occupées à laver du linge.

La couleur harmonieuse de ce tableau est tout-à-fait enchan ́teresse, la lumière y est répandue avec éclat, et les attitudes naturelles des animaux y sont rendues avec une vérité et une perfection que peu de peintres ont su atteindre. Le soin avec lequel est peint ce tableau fait voir qu'il est de la meilleure époque de l'auteur, et avant le temps où il prit l'habitude de travailler à la hâte, dans le désir de satisfaire les goûts intéressés de sa femme.

Sur la pierre qui est au milieu du devant au bord de l'eau, on lit N. Berghem. Ce tablean, peint sur bois, a été gravé par G. Dobler, dans la galerie impériale de Vienne, publié par Charles Haas.

THE TORRENT.

Seeking to quench their thirst, some cattle arrive at noon, near a water-fall, that gushes with great noise from the clefts of a rock, but soon becomes calm upon a flat part, where some women are busied washing linen.

The harmonious colouring of this picture is quite enchanting, the light is spread over it with brightness, and the natural attitudes of the animals are given with a truth and perfection that few painters have been able to reach. The care with which this picture is painted shows it to have been done in the author's best time, and before he took the habit of working hastily, to satisfy his wife's interested views.

On the stone in the middle of the fore-ground, by the waterside, is written, N. Berghem. This picture, which is painted on wood, has been engraved, by G. Dobler, in the Imperial Gallery, published by Charles Haas.
