people-perplexed, agitated, and by anticipation. not knowing where to look for leaders-toss to and fro, noisy yet harmless, waiting till wiser heads than have yet considered their wants shall deal with and supply them. We say nothing of the Irish demonstrations, except that they fully bore out the characteristics of the country. Their only result was to convince lookers-on that neither did Mr. Bright understand the Irish people, nor the Irish people understand or put any value on Mr. Bright. So, also, of what may come to pass in London on the 3d of December, it would be idle to speak
will venture to predict, that the whole affair will pass over with perfect quietude; and that, when all is done, the opinion of thoughtful men will remain as it is that the most hopeless of all efforts is that of those who think of carrying political measures by violence; for neither would the Legislature yield to violence were it offered, nor can the working men of London or the provinces be induced by any amount of blandishment or flattery to offer violence to the Legislature, and disgrace themselves in doing so.
