neighbours, therefore, and they who before had known the blind man, faid, Is not this he that fat and begged ? Some faid, This is he; others faid, He is like him; but be faid, I am he.

3....Therefore faid they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? He anfwered and faid, A man who is called Jefus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and faid unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash : and I went and washed, and I received my fight. Then faid they unto him, Where is he? He laid, I know

not.

4....They brought the man who had been blind to the Pharifees and it was the Sabbath day when Jefus made the clay and opened his eyes. Then again, the Pharifees also asked him how he had received his fight. He faid unto them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do fee. Therefore faid fome of the Pharifees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the Sabbath day. Others faid, How can a man who is a finner do fuch miracles? And there was a divifion among them.

5.....They fay unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, refpecting his having opened thine eyes? He faid, he is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his fight, until they had called his parents. And they afked them, faying, Is this your fon, who ye lay was

born blind? How then doth he now fee ?

6....His parents anfwered them and faid, We know that this is our fon, and that he was born blind; but by what means he now feeth, we know not; he is of age, afk hini; he fhall fpeak for himfelt. These words fpake his parents, because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did con

fels that he was Chrift, he fhould be put out of the fynagogue. Therefore faid his parents, He is of age, afk him.

7....Then again called they the man who was blind, and faid unto him, Give God the praise we know that this man is a finner. He answered and said, Whe ther he be a finner or no, I know not one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I fee. Then faid they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? He anfwered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would you hear it again? Will ye alfo be his disciples ?

8....Then they reviled him, and faid, Thou art his difciple, but we are the difciples of Mofes. We know that God fpake unto Mofes as for this fellow, we know not whence he is. The man answered and faid unto them, Why, herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

g....Now, we know that God heareth not finners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doth his will, him he heareth. Since the world began was it not heard, that any man opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

10....They answered, and faid unto him, Thou waft altogether born in fins, and doft thou teach us ? And they caft him out. Jefus heard that they had caft him out; and when he had found him he faid unto him, Doft thou believe on the fon of God? He anfwered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? And Jefus faid unto him, Thou haft both feen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. And he faid, Lord,

believe, and he worshipped him.

CHAPTER VI.

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS FROM THE

Now

DEAD.

A. D. 33.

OW a certain man was fick, named "Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her fifter Martha. (It was that Mary who anointed the Lord "with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whofe brother Lazaros was fick.) Therefore his fifters fent unto Jefus, faying, Lord, behold, he whom thou love eft is fick. When Jefus heard it, he faid, This fick.. nels is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the fon of God might be glorified thereby.

2....Now Jefus loved Martha, and her fifter, and Lazarus. When he had heard, therefore, that he was fick, he abode two days ftill in the fame place where he was. Then afterward he faith to his difciples, Let us go into Judea again. His difciples fay unto him, Mafter, the Jews of late fought to flone thee; and goeft thou thither again?

3.... Jefus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not, because he feeth the light of the world. But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. Thefe things faid he and after that he faith unto them, Our friend Lazarus fleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of fleep. Then faid his difciples, Lord, if he fleep, he fhall do well

4....Howbeit, Jefus fpake of his death: but they thought that he had fpoken of taking reft in fleep. Then faid Jefus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your fakes that I was not there, të

the intent ve may believe; neverthelefs, let us go unto him. Then faid Thomas unto his difciples, Let us alfo go, that we may die with him. Then when Jefus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days.

5....Now Bethany being nigh unto Jerufalem, many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Then Martha, as soon as fhe heard that Jefus was coming, went and met him ; but Mary fat ftill in the house. Then faid Martha unto Jefus, Lord, if thou hadft been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt afk of God, God will give it thee.

6.... Jefus faith unto her, Thy brother fall rife again. Martha faith unto him, I know that he fhall rife again in the refurrection at the laft day. Jefus faid unto her, I am the refurrection and the life: he that believeth on me, though he were dead, yet fhall he live and whofoever liveth and believeth in me fhall never die. Believeft thou this ? She faith unto him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Chrift, the fon of God, who fhould come into the world.

7....And when the had to faid, fhe went her way, and called Mary her fifter fecretly, faying, The Mafter is come, and calleth for thee. As foon as he heard that, fhe arofe quickly, and came unto him. Now Jefus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. The Jews then who were with her in the house, and comforted, her, when they faw that Mary rofe up haftily, and went out, followed, her, faying, the goeth unto the grave, to weep there.

8....Then when Mary was come where Jefus was and faw him, fhe fell down at his feet, faying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here my brother had not died. When Jefus, therefore, faw her weeping,and the Jews

alfo weeping, who came with her, he groaned in the fpirit, and was troubled, and faid, Where have ye laid him? They fay unto him, Lord, come and fee.

9.... Jefus wept. Then faid the Jews, Behold, how he loved him! And fome of them faid, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caufed even that this man fhould not have died? Jefus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a fone laid upon it. Jefus faid, Take away the flone. Martha, the fifter of him who was dead, faid unto him, Lord, by this time he fcenteth; for he hath been dead four days.

10.... Jefus faith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that if thou wouldeft believe, thou fhouldeft fee the glory of God? Then they took away the ftone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jefus lifted up his eyes, and faid, Father, I thank thee that Thou haft heard me. And I knew that Thou heareft me always but because of the people who ftand by I faid it, that they may believe that Thou haft fent me.

11....And when he had thus fpoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jefus faith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

REMARKS.

The following remarks do, in this place, naturally occur firfly, as Jefus appeared in the infinitely important character of the Meffiah, whom the prophets foretold, it was neceffary that there fhould be an extraordinary divine atteflation of his miffion, and of the truth of his doctrines. And for this end, namely, to evidence the reality of his Meffiahfhip, was the variety of aftonishing miracles, which were wrought in the beginning of the gofpel difpenfation.
