Inftitution, part to be regarded, and part to be typically observed, it fhewed the Covenant and the Perfon, the Inftrument and Action, joined in one Word, which expreffed the fort of the cutting off, or Death of him, who, in Type and Reality, fhould by his Suffering there change the Scene of Wrath and Deftruction towards himself, and the Criminals for Peace, Lives, Glory, &c. The Defign of this Exhibition is fhewed in the following Words, to keep (as a religious Inftitution, to keep by obferving what was inftituted) the very Way to the Tree of Lives. Exod. xvi. 28. "How long refufe ye to keep my Commandments and my Laws? So, Numb. xxxi. 30, 47. " How long refufe ye to keep my Commandments and my Laws? So Numb. xxxi. 30, 47. To the Levites.

reftrain, or hinder Men from coming at a thing, without which they must be eternally miserable. But, by these Actions of the great Ones, and of the Pricft, and Sacrifices, the Types of one of them, to keep the very Way really, and typically for Men by Obfervation, by Compliance.

This

Vision exhibited Mercy to Man, the Wrath was to fall upon his Surety; Pfal. lxxx. 17. Let thy Hand be upon w's the Man of thy Right-hand (his Pofition in the Cherubim) upon the Son of Man whom thou madeft ftrong for thy felf. So will not we go back from thee; quicken us, and we will call upon thy Name, &c. Pfal. cx. 1. To the Beloved a Song. Jehovah faid to my Lord, fit at my Righthand; till I make thine Enemies thy Footstool." This Word refers back to the whole Appearance, or what it hieroglyphically exhibited as an Inftitution to be kept on one Part, and to be observed typically on the other Part; and forward to the Reality, to 8 the very Way to the Tree of Lives. The great ones, the Trinity on their Part, fo the Man to be taken in on his Part, and all Mankind on their Part were to obferve this Inftitution: The Trinity to keep the Covenant, the Man to fuffer and atone, the joint Perfon to intercede:

cede: Mankind, before the Satisfaction, to make and preferve thefe Figures, which were exhibited as a Teftimony, a Memorial, a Representation of thefe Perfons and their Actions; to perform those Actions emblematically, by a Reprefentative of the Perfon, and by Substitutes, by Creatures, to lay their Sins upon the Creatures; to believe that Chrift would make Atonement, that the Father would accept it, that the Holy Ghoft would fanctify Perfons fo reconciled. After the Satisfaction, to exhibit the Memorial of it, to believe that he had made Satisfaction, and that it would be accepted. The Way, the very Way to the Tree of Lives, was not to that in the Middle of the terreftrial Paradife, that Way was forfeited, and they were expelled; the trueWay, then, was through Fire and Blood; this Word Way is fo often mentioned and defcribed both in the Old and New Scriptures, that I need not add; but, as these things are new and ftrange, I fhall infert a Text or two. John xiv. 6. I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. Heb. x. 20.—a new and living Way. The Tree, as an Emblem, refers to the Fruit it bears, which is here expreffed Lives, Immortality; who produces that Fruit needs. no proving. Revel. ii. 7. To him that

overcometh will I give to eat of the Tree of Life, which is in the Midst of the Paradife of God. Ibid. xxi. 10. And fhewed me that great City, the holy Jerufalem. xxii. 2. In the Midst of the Street of it, and on either Side of the River; the Tree of Life, which bare twelve manner of Fruits, and yielded her Fruit every Month: And the Leaves of the Tree, were for the healing of the Nations.

This Appearance was certainly compleat, comprehended hieroglyphically all that was to be believed and obferved, all that was neceffary to be known of the Covenant, all the Inftitutions, all that was typically exhibited before, or in the Tabernacle or Temple, all they reprefented above, and prefigured all that was to be really performed below, the Times inftituted or renewed, only excepted, the Prefence of the Aleim in the Cherubim, &c. with Man taken in, the Priesthood, the Sacrifices, the Interceffor's Office, the Sprinkling of the Blood, &c. Though in writing hieroglyphically, from this manner of Representation, the Words be very few, thefe Things were well understood, when Mofes writ; and the Pattern fhewed to him in the Mount, and to David after, was the Method of instructing them better than Words could do; and, as I have
