"The life of a Christian must be a warfare. And ministers of the word must go before the head of the army, sword in hand, and lead on the troops after them, being armed and always ready for the onset, as in a real battle; otherwise we shall soon be defeated. We must therefore devote all our energies to God's cause. AND SINCE WE POSSESS THE PURE WORD OF GOD, WE CANNOT DEPART FROM IT WITHOUT INJURY. False teachers will arise, who will lead people astray. The devil will never be inactive. He slays some by false doctrines, which he mingles with the true. He is sure to strike some, whatever care we take."-MARTIN LUTHER.

SEVERAL learned and elaborate works, exhibiting a large amount of sanctified talent, and the warmest attachment to genuine scriptural truth and Protestant Reformation principles, have recently issued from the press, on the present prevailing "Errors of the Times." Some of them, however, with all their acknowledged excellencies, are too scholastic, erudite, and controversial to interest general readers, or too large and costly for widely-extended circulation. With the intention, therefore, and hope of meeting this deficiency, the following work, aiming at plainness of style-comprehensiveness in range and varied illustration-has been prepared and published.

The masses of the people, need to be far more deeply, and thoroughly indoctrinated

with Bible verities, and the distinctive principles of the glorious Reformation from Popery than they are at present. The uninformed, and the undecided also, need to be armed, forewarned, and defended against the dangerous, insidious attacks, and specious doctrinal fallacies of numerous semi and anti-protestant teachers.

We live in a most critical period of the Church's history. We ask, are there not thousands who, as preachers from the pulpit, or as authors (in papers fugitive, and in works as elaborate continually issuing from the press) are doing all they can to lead away the minds of our population from the simplicity and spirituality of the gospel, by repudiating the doctrine of Justification by Faith alone in Jesus? Are there not multitudes who are strenuously endeavouring to re-introduce into professedly protestant England the reign of superstition, and aiming again to enslave the human mind by recommending and countenancing a return to unmeaning. ceremonial rites, and anti-scriptural tenets, and popish absurdities and observances?
