Trumpeter in a certain army happened to be taken prifoner. He was ordered immediately to execution, but pleaded in excufe for himself, that it was unjust a perfon fhould fuffer

death, who fo far from having an intention of mischief, did not even wear an offenfive weapon. So much the rather, replied one of the enemy, fhalt thou die, fince, without any defign of t fighting thyfelf, thou exciteft others to the bloody bufinefs: for he that is the abettor of a bad action, is at least equally guilty with him who commits it.

The Moral.

The fomentor of mischief is at least as culpable as he who puts it in execution.

POETRY.

NOME children learn to fear the Lord;
And that your days be long,

COME

Let not a falfe or fpiteful word,
Be found upon your tongue. -
Depart from mifchief, practife love,
Purfue the works of peace;›
So fhall the Lord your ways approve,›
Your pureft joys increase:

The Lord beholds and loves the jufti,
His cars attend their cry;

I

In him their fouls may ever truft,
For he is always nigh.

Though bitter forrows they may taste,
And long affliction know: 900 ml
The Lord, who gives them blifs at laft,
Is their fupport below.

In danger's hour, though finners faint,
And fee no fhelter near;

God is a refuge for the faint,
And scatters ev'ry fear.

When refurrection's hour fhall come,
And death itfelf fhall die;
The Lord will take his fervants home,
To endless life and joy.

Well, if our days 'muft fly,

[ocr errors]

We'll keep their end in fight,
We'll spend them all in wifdom's way,
And let them fpeed their flight.

V.

They'll waft us fooner o'er

This life's tenipeftuous fea;

Then we shall reach the peaceful fhore
Of bleft eternity.

AST are thy works, Almighty Lord,
All nature refts upon thy word,
And the whole race of creatures fland,
Waiting their portion from thy hand.

While they receive their diff'rent food,
Their cheerful looks pronounce it good;
Men, birds, beafts, infects, fish, and worms,
Rejoice and praise in diff'rent forms.

But when thy face is hid, they mourn,
And, dying, to their duft return:
They at thy will, their breath refign,
For life in every form is thine.

Yet thou canst breathe on duft again,
And fill the world with beafts and men,
A word of thy creating breath
Repairs the waftes of time and death.

His works, the wonder of his might,
Are honour'd with his own delight:
How awful are his glorious ways!
Exceeding far our highest praise.

In thee our hopes and wishes meet,
And make our meditations fweet;
Thy praises fhall our breath employ,
And heaven at last complete our joy.

THAT the Lord would guide my ways,
To keep his ftatutes still!

O that my God would grant me grace

To know and do his will.

In deepest characters impress
Thy law upon my heart!
By flander let me ne'er tranfgrefs,,
Nor act the liar's part.

From vanity turn off my eyes,
Let no corrupt defign,
Nor covetous defires arife,
Within this foul of mine.

Order my footsteps by thy word,
And make my heart fincere ;;
Let fin have no dominion Lord,
But keep my conscience clear!

Affit my foul, too apt to ftray,
A ftricter watch to keep;
And fince I've not forgot thy way,
Reftore thy wand'ring sheep.

Make me to walk in thy commands.
'Tis a delightful road;

Nor let my head, or heart, or hands,
Offend against my God..
