The verbal alterations are very few, and when a word is occasionally added, it is chiefly for the purpose of connecting distant portions of the same subject. A few explanatory notes are inserted. where the sense of the text may not be quite clear to some readers. The extracts have been made with the desire of leading persons of all ranks, who profess their belief in the Scriptures, as oracles of God, to consider whether they are really endeavouring to frame their lives according to Scripture rules. iv Texts, therefore, that have reference to practice, have been alone selected.
