Spiritual Presence Better than Bodily; or, the

Underlying Principle of Christ's Personal Reign upon Earth shewn to be Unscriptural. A. SERMON. By the Rev. JOSEPH S. EXELL. -Price 2d., post free 2d.

Opinions of the Press.

This is an excellent discourse, apart from its polemical object. We fully agree with the Preacher that what we want is not Christ in Jerusalem so much as Christ in our hearts. Let us not wait for future times to see God, let us see Him now; in our churches and in our homes.' These are wise and fitting words, and the Sermon is full of such."-The Christian Age.

"This is an eloquent and philosophical exposition of John xvi, 7-14, in which the author, with irresistible logic, scatters to the winds the airy theories of the millenarians. It is a tract of rare intrinsic worth, deserving a wide circulation.”—The Primitive Methodist.

"This discourse abounds with original, forceful, and practical thinking; it is multum in parvo."-The Homilist.

Elijah at Carmel. A Poem. By the Rev. E. S.

JACKSON. Trinity Congregational Chapel, Peterborough. Price 2d.

Our Week Night Service; being Practical Readings

in the Book of Jonah. By the Rev. J. S. EXELL.-Price 2d. each Published Monthly. London: Elliot Stock, 62, Paternoster Row. "Highly favoured indeed is the congregation where such well-digested edifying material is given them at the week evening gathering. We trust in this printed form they will be extensively circulated, and we feel confident they will be most acceptable and useful to all classes of Christian readers. Mr. Exell will do well to cultivate the gift of clear biblical exposition, which he so eminently possesses."-The Baptist Messenger.

HOLLOWAY'S PILLS

-None but the strongest can with impunity pass through the

sudden transitions from wet to dry, from cold to muggy weather generally prevalent during the past and present winter months. Influenza, bronchitis, cough, sore throat, diphtheria, quinsey, will attack those most watchful of their health; but they can readily arrest any of these complaints by rubbing Holloway's Ointment twice a day upon the skin, adjacent to the affected parts, and by assisting its corrective action with appropriate doses of his Pills. This well-known, safe and easy mode of treatment efficiently protects the invalid both from present and future danger, without weakening or even depressing the system in the slightest degree.

A FEW WORDS OF INTRODUCTION.

SUR readers will have been prepared, by previous advertise

ments, for the change observable to-day in the Editorship of this Magazine. The Rev. J. Bate, who has conducted it for the last five years, has now ceased his connection with it, and consigned its fortunes to our care. We issue this first number with diffidence, but hope that our readers will perceive, among many shortcomings, an earnest endeavour to carry out the original design of the "Lay Preacher," with some foreshadowings of literary improvement. Our object will not be to supply completed Sermons ready for use, but to impart inspiration to thought, and stimulus to research. The Sermons and Articles which will appear from time to time, are intended to serve the Preacher just as the hints of the designer help the skilled artificer in his productive labour.

The Contributions to these pages, coming from leading ministers, and prominent lay preachers of all denominations, will ever be loyal to the inspired Word of God, and will plainly declare the evangelistic message of the Cross.

A FEW WORDS OF EXPLANATION.

We propose to continue the existing arrangement of the "LAY PREACHER." The paper, however, is of superior quality, and we have made the Magazine more attractive in its external and general appearance. But conscious we are that good paper and nice covers alone, will not supply mental food. Hence
