PREFACE.

IT is with much diffidence that the author ventures to lay the following Course of Lectures before the Christian Public; the same motive, however, which induced him to prepare them for delivery, influenced him in yielding to the publicly-expressed wish of the persons to whom they were originally addressed, that they should obtain publicity through the medium of the press. The circumstances in which they originated, as well as the primary object proposed in their delivery, are stated in the Introductory Lecture, to which the reader is referred. Had the author fully anticipated,
