HAT the heathen world was greatly enlightened and reformed by the lectures and inftructions of the Philofophers, nobody will difpute who confiders, that the chief principle which they inculcated on their difciples and followers was, that happiness was at. tainable only by an abftinence from vice, and the practice of virtue; and that the main bent of their studies was, to promote the univerfal good of mankind.
