And he brought thie ark into the tabernacle, and set up the vail of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony, as the Lord commanded Moses. ..

And he put the table in the tent of the congregation, upon the side of the tabernacle northward without the * vail.

And he set the bread in order upon it, before the Lord ; as the Lord had commanded Moses.. .

And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congres gation, over against the table, on the side of the 'tabernacle southward.

And he lighted the lamps before the LORD : as the Lord commanded Moses.

And he put the golden altar in the tent of the con.' gregation, before the vail : and he burnt sweet incense thereon ; as the Lord commanded Moses. And he set up the hanging, at the door of the tabernacle.

And he put the altar of burnt-offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation, and offer. ed upon it the burnt-offering, and the meat-offering ; ' as the Lord commanded Moses.

And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate : so Moses finished the work.

Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

And the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. - And Moses said unto the congregation, This is the thing which the LORD commanded to be done.

And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water.

And he put upon him the coat, and girded him with the girdle, and cloathed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the curious girdle of the ephod, and bound it unto him therewith.

And he put the breast-plate upon him : also he put in the breast-plate the Urim and Thummim. . .

And he put the mitre upon his head; also upon the mitre, even upon his fore-front did he put the golden plate, the holy crown; as the Lord commanded Mo. ses.

And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him to sanctify him.

And Moses brought Aaron's sons, and pùt coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put bonnets upon them ; as the LORD commanded Moses.

And Moses offered for them sin-offerinys, anit burnt-offerings, and the ram of consecration, and the wave-offering ; and he poured blood round about the altar.

And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him ; and sanctified Aa. ron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garą ments with him. .

And Moses said unto Aaron and his sons, Ye shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration be at an end ; for seven days shall he consecrate you, as he ! hath done this day, so the Lord had commanded to do, to make an atonement for you..

Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night, seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that ye die not, for so I am commanded.

C 2

So Aaron and his sons did all things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

ANNOTATIONS AND REFLECTIONS. *As Moses was the mediator of the covenant, he was in that character, allowed to offer the sacrifice of atone. ment for himself, and to dedicate the altar, but it is evident, that he was a sinner, as well as the rest of humankind, or he would not have stood in need of atonement : we may suppose, that fire from Heaven consumed the victim he offered. .

The Lord himself sanctified the Tabernaclė by His glorious PRESENCE.

It was necessary to acquaint the people, that Aaron and his sons were chosen to the priesthood by Divine command, that they might honour them accordingly.

The priests were washed by Moses, to signify, that none are clean in the sight of the Lord who are not purified by the mediator.

The oil with which Aaron and his sons were anointed, was a kind of liquid ointment, composed of myrrh, cinnamon, and other rich spices, mixed up with olive oil ; and there was none to be made like it on pain of death. All the vessels of the tabernacle, as well as the priests, were anointed with it, to signify that they were set apart from common uses as instruments of holy wore ship.

To intimate that the priests had no intrinsic holiness, they were required to bring sacrifices to the mediator, that he might make atonement for them, and consecrate. them to the LORD!

With what joy must the Israelites have beheld the tabernacle when cvery thing was placed in order, and prepared for their holding communion with the Lord'!

With what joy should Christians enter into these sa cred places, in which the Lord is equally present through invisible!

Though priests have no intrinsic holiness, every one ordained for the sacred offices of religion should be honoured and respected as the minister of God.

SECTION V.
THE FIRST SERVICE IN THE TABERNACLE.

From Levit. Chap. ix AND it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel ; and he said unto Aaron, Take 'thee a young calf for a sin. offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without ble. mish, and offer them before the LORD..

And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak · saying, Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin offering ;

and a calf, and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering ; also a bullock and a ram, for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meat-offering mingled with oil ; for today the LORD will appear unto you.

And they brought that which Moses conimanded before the tabernacle of the congregation : and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD..

And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do ; and the glory of the LORD shall appear unto you.

And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin-offeriug, and thy burnt-offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people : and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.

C 3

Aaron

Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the talf of the sin-offering, which was for hiniself.

And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar : but the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin-offering he burnt upon the altar; as the Lord commanded Moses.

And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire, with. out the camp.

And he slew the burnt-offering ; and Aaron's sons pra. sented unto him the blood, wlrich he sprinkled round about upon the altar.

And they presented the burnt-offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head; and he burnt them upon the altar.

And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt-offering on the altar. ..

And he brought the people's offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and slew it and offered it for sin, as the first.

And he brought the burnt-offering, and offered it according to the madner.

Ard he brought the meat-offeriag, and cook an handful thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning.

He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people : and Aa. rod's sons presented unto him the blood, (which he sprinkled upon the altar round about) and the fat of the bullock, and of the ram, the rump, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver ; and the breasts and the right shoulder Aaron waved for a wave-offering before, the Lorii, as Msses commanded.
