ABRAM IN EGYPT.

"And there was a famine in the land and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife; and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

"And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair. The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh and the woman was taken into Pharoah's house. And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and sheasses, and camels. And the Lord plagued Pharoah and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife, And Pharoah called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. And Pharoah commanded his men concerning him and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had."-GEN. xii. 10-20.

W. I suppose that is for us to learn not to be conceited, and suppose that we can always do right.

P. That is one reason, no doubt that we may take warning. And here is another reason- -God's Word must be TRUTH. It could not give an account of any man which is not true-and as all men will sometimes do evil as well as good, so it cannot give you an account of a man who is quite perfect.

To-day, therefore, you will have to learn how even the good Abram did wrong. He forgot his principles.

L. What were they, papa?

P. You may remember. The principle of faith, which we talked of in our last lesson, was one. His thought, you know, was-"God's word is truth; I will trust in God, who has promised to make from me a great nation."

Now, hear more about his travels. He and his large company wandered on, far away, over many hills, and through cool pleasant valleys where rivers flowed. At night they spread their tents, with the broad blue sky for their roof. That was a broad roof, but a very beautiful one, with its millions of twinkling stars. How they all sparkled and glittered! they were even more numerous than the men and cattle beneath. Some of the men, perhaps, as they lay down, would think
