SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST. We have before twice given, in nos 91 and 98, St. John the Baptist preaching; one by Raffaelle, the other by Guido Reni. We now present another, attributed to Michael-Angelo Buonarotti, though we rather think it, by John Baptist Mola. In each of those pictures, St. John is seated on a rock; but in this, the figure has less action, and the attitude, is more simple. However, the motion of the left hand, evidently indicates, that the holy precursor is seeking to persuade his hearers, that Christ, the son of God, foretold by the prophets, is at length among them. The youthfulness and nudity of the figure would alone suffice to characterise St. John the Baptist, even were there not seen, near him, the cross and the label, on which are partly visible these words: Ecce Agnus Dei. Déja deux fois, sous les nos 91 et 98, nous avons donné saint Jean-Baptiste prêchant : l'un est de Raphaël, l'autre est de Guido Reni; nous en donnons cette fois un autre que l'on attri bue sans raison à Michel-Ange Buonarotti, et que nous croyons plutôt de Jean-Baptiste Mola. Dans chacun de ces tableaux, saint Jean est assis sur un rocher; mais dans celui-ci la figure a moins de mouvement, la pose est plus simple. Cependant le geste de la main gauche indique sans aucun doute que le saint précurseur cherche à persuader à ceux qui l'écoutent que le Christ, le fils de Dieu, annoncé par les prophètes, est enfin parmi eux. La jeunesse de la figure et sa nudité seraient déja des caractères suffisans pour faire connaître saint Jean-Baptiste, s'il ne se trouvait encore près de lui la croix et la banderole sur laquelle on aperçoit en partie ces mots : Ecce Agnus Dei.
