3 Here's love and grief beyond degree,
The Lord of glory dies for men!
But, lo! what sudden joys we see!
Jesus the dead, revives again!
4 The rising God forsakes the tomb !
Up to his Father's court he flies!
Cherubic legions guard him home,

And shout him, Welcome to the skies!
5 Dry up your tears, ye saints, and tell
How high our great Deliverer reigns;
Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell,
And led the tyrant Death in chains.
6 Say, "Live for ever, glorious King,

"Born to redeem, and strong to save!" Then ask, "O death, where is thy sting? "And where thy victory, boasting, grave?" Watts' Lyr.

28. The Lord is risen. 7's.

1 CHRIST the Lord is ris'n to-day, Sons of men and angels say: Raise your joys and triumphs high, Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply! 2 Love's redeeming work is done, Fought the fight, the victory won: Jesus' agony is o'er,

Darkness veils the earth no more.

3 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,
Christ has burst the gates of hell;
Death in vain forbids him raise,
Christ has open'd paradise.

4 Lives again our glorious King!
"Where, O death, is now thy sting?"

Once he died, our souls to save;
"Where's thy victory, boasting grave?"
Cudworth.

29. Christ's Resurrection. H. M.

1 YES, the Redeemer rose;
The Savior left the dead;

And o'er our hellish foes

High raised his conquering head:
In wild dismay the guards around
Fall to the ground, and sink away.
2 Lo! the angelic bands

In full assembly meet,
To wait his high commands,
And worship at his feet:

Joyful they come, and wing their way,
From realms of day to Jesus' tomb.
3 Then back to heaven they fly,
The joyful news to bear;
Hark! as they soar on high

What music fills the air!

Their anthems say, "Jesus, who bled,
"Hath left the dead, He rose to-day."
4 Ye mortals, catch the sound,
Redeem'd by him from hell;

And send the echo round

The globe on which you dwell;
Transported cry, "Jesus, who bled,
"Hath left the dead, no more to die."
5 All hail, triumphant Lord,

Who sav'st us with thy blood?
Wide be thy name ador'd,

Thou rising, reigning God!

With thee we rise, with thee we reign,

And empires gain beyond the skies.

Doddridge.

30. Resurrection and Ascension. 7s.

1 ANGELS roll the rock away!

Death, yield up the mighty prey!
See, the Savior quits the tomb,
Glowing with immortal bloom.
2 Shout, ye seraphs; Gabriel, raise
Fame's eternal trump of praise;
Let the earth's remotest bound
Echo to the blissful sound.

3 Now, ye saints, lift up your eyes;
See the conqu❜ror mount the skies;
Troops of angels on the road,
Hail and sing the incarnate God.
4 Heav'n unfolds her portals wide:
Glorious Hero, through them ride;
King of glory, mount thy throne,
Boundless empire is thine own.
5 Praise him, ye celestial choirs,
Praise, and sweep your golden lyres;
Praise him in the noblest songs,
From ten thousand thousand tongues.
6 Let Emmanuel be ador'd;
Ransom, Mediator, Lord:

To creation's utmost bound

Let the immortal praise resound. Gibbons.

31. Christ's Exaltation.

L. M.

I WHAT equal honors shall we bring
To thee, O Lord our God, the Lamb,

When all the notes that angels sing,
Are far inferior to thy name?

2 Worthy is he that once was slain,

The Prince of Life, that groan'd and di’d;

Worthy to rise, and live, and reign
At his Almighty Father's side.

3 Pow'r and dominion are his due,

Who stood condemned at Pilate's bar: Wisdom belongs to Jesus too,

Tho' he was charg'd with madness there.

4 All riches are his native right,

Yet he sustain'd amazing loss:
To him ascribe eternal might,

Who left his weakness on the cross.
5 Honor immortal must be paid,
Instead of scandal and of scorn;
While glory shines around his head,
And a bright crown without a thorn.

6 Blessings for ever on the Lamb,
Who bore the curse for wretched men:
Let angels sound his sacred name,
And every creature say, Amen.

Watts.

32. Coronation of Christ. C. M.
ALL hail the power of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall;

Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown him-Lord of all.

2 Crown him, ye martyrs of our God,
Who from his altar call;
Extol the stem of Jesse's rod,
And crown him-Lord of all.

3 Hail him, ye heirs of David's line,
Whom David, Lord, did call:
The God incarnate! Man Divine!
And crown him-Lord of all.

4 Ye chosen seed of Israel's race,
Ye ransom'd from the fall,

1

Hail him who saves you by his grace,
And crown him-Lord of all.

5 Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget
The wormwood and the gall;
Go, spread your trophies at his feet,
And crown him-Lord of all.

6 Let every kindred, every tribe,
On this terrestrial ball,

To him all majesty ascribe,

And crown him-Lord of all. Duncan.

33. Christ's Intercession.

L. M.

HE lives! the great Redeemer lives,
What joy the blest assurance gives!

And now, before his Father, God,
Pleads the full merit of his blood.

2 Repeated crimes awake our fears,
And justice arm'd with frowns appears
But in the Savior's lovely face

Sweet mercy smiles, and all is peace.

3 Hence then ye black despairing thoughts;
Above our fears, above our faults,

His powerful intercessions rise;
And guilt recedes, and terror dies.

4 In every dark distressful hour,
When sin and satan join their power,
Let this dear hope repel the dart,
That JESUS bears us on his heart.

5 Great Advocate, Almighty Friend!
On him our humble hopes depend:
Our cause can never, never fail,

For JESUS pleads, and must prevail. [Steele.
