after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of
you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not
down first and counteth the cost, whether he
have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply after he
hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish
it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying,
This man began to build, and was not able to
finish. Or what king, going to make war
against another king, sitteth not down first,
and consulteth whether he be able with ten
thousand to meet him that cometh against
him with twenty thousand? Or else, while
the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an
ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
So likewise, whosoever he be of you that for-
saketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my
disciple. Salt is good; but if the salt have lost
his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? It
is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dung-
hill; but men cast it out.

and the scribes came upon him, with the elders, and spake unto him, saying, Tell us, By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? but and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. And they answered that they could not tell whence it was. And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. And again he sent a third and they wounded him also, and cast him out. Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son:

see him. But when the husbandmen saw him,
they reasoned among themselves, saying, This
is the heir; come, let us kill him, that the
inheritance may be ours. So they cast him out
of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore
shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
He shall come and destroy these husbandmen,
and shall give the vineyard to others. And
when they heard it, they said, God forbid. And
he beheld them, and said, What is this then that
is written, The stone which the builders reject-
ed, the same is become the head of the corner?
Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be
broken; but upon whomsoever it shall fall, it
will grind him to powder. And the chief priests
and the scribes the same hour sought to lay
hands on him; and they feared the people :
for they perceived that he had spoken this
parable against them.

Y brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth; and having on the breast-plate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; above all taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance, and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that L may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

The Collect.

ORD, we beseech thee to keep thy household the Church in continual godliness; that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. Phil. i. 3.

THANK my God upon every remembrance of you,(always in every prayer of mine for you

all making request with joy,) for your fellowship in the Gospel from the first day until now: being confident of this very thing, that he who hath begun a good work in you will perform it until

the day of Jesus Christ; even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the Gospel, ye are all partakers of my grace. For God is my record, how greatly I long after you

all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge, and in all judgement:

that ye may approve things that are excellent, that ye may be sincere, and without offence, till the day of Christ: being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

The Gospel. Matt. xviii. 21.

PETER said unto Jesus, Lord, how oft

shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, until seven times; but until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, which owed him an hundred pence; and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellow-servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not; but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow-servant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

The Collect.

O GOD, our refuge and strength, who art beseech thee, to hear the devout prayers of thy the author of all godliness; Be ready, we Church; and grant, that those things, which we ask faithfully, we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. II. Thess. i. 1.

PAUL, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto

the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and

the Lord Jesus Christ. We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth: so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God, for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure; which is a manifest token of the righteous judgement of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to you who are troubled, rest with us; when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power; that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink : I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The Collect.

LORD, who never failest to help and govern them whom thou dost bring up in thy stedfast fear and love; Keep us, we beseech thee, under the protection of thy good providence, and make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. Phil. iv. 1.

HEREFORE, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yoke-fellow, help those women that laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men: The Lord is at hand. Be careful

for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through

Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things áre pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do; and the God of peace shall be with you.

The Gospel. John iv. 23.

BUT the hour cometh, and now is, when

the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her? The woman then left her water-pot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. In the meanwhile his disciples prayed him, saying, Master,

eat.

But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Say not ye, There are yet four months and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields: for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

Note. If there be any more Sundays between this and the Sunday next before Advent, the Service of some of those Sundays, that were omitted after the Epiphany, shall be taken in to supply so many as are here wanting. And if there be fewer, the overplus may be omitted. This Anthem, Collect, Epistle and Gospel following, being always used on the Sunday next before Advent.

The Sunday before Advent.
THE ANTHEM.

KEEP silence before the Lord, O islands;

and let the people renew their strength: let them come near, then let them speak, let us come near together to judgement.-Is. xli.1. But who may abide the day of his coming?

and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire.-Mal. iii. 2.

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced

him and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.-Rev. i. 7.

And they that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness, as the stars for ever and ever.-Dan. xii. 2, 3.

Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shall be; even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgements. -Rev. xvi. 5. 7.

The Epistle. I. Cor. xv. 50.

NOW this I say, brethren, that flesh and

blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

The Gospel. John v. 25.

VERILY, verily, I say unto you, The hour

is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; and hath given him authority to execute judgement also, because he is the Son of man. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
