I can, perhaps more clearly than in any other way, indicate what little I have done as Superintendent, by inserting here notes from my journal in regard to it:

"July and August. Unwell. Did but little in regard to the general missionary work, except to correspond extensively with brethren in different parts of the country concerning it.

"July 21. Gave order on the Treasurer, T. Hitchcock, to Rev. W. H. Hinckley, Superintendent of the Maryland Association, for one hundred dollars ($100), to be used under his direction in furthering the work of missions in Virginia, having special reference to Mr. Walton's work in the vicinity of the Cabells.

"Sept. 10-25. Visited Athens, Meigs, and Gallia Counties, Ohio, principally on personal business, but partly also to look after the condition of the Church there.

"Sept. 28. Gave order on the Treasurer- to O. Gerrish, Treasurer of the Maine Association - for one hundred dollars ($100), to be used under the direction of the Rev. S. F. Dike, President of said Association, in furthering the work of missions in Maine.

"October 3. Sent check for one hundred dollars ($100), received of Thomas Hitchcock, Treasurer of Convention, to Rev. J. P. Stuart, President of the Missouri Association, to be used in furthering the work of missions in Missouri and Tennessee.

"October 23-26. Sent letters, with circular, to every pastor of the New Church in the United States, requesting them to bring the subject before their respective congregations, and have action, if possible.

"Sent circular, with return envelope, to all the names in the List of Places where are Receivers,' found at the close of the Journal of the Convention for the year 1870, except Canada, and the places following the same.

"Nov. 16. Sent an order to Mr. T. Hitchcock, Treasurer of the Convention, to send one hundred dollars ($100) to J. P. Collins, Treasurer of the Georgia Association, to assist the Association to support a missionary the current year.

"Nov. 18, to Dec. 9. Visited Minnesota, worked three weeks. Attended the Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Association, at Minneapolis. Officiated at the dedication of the temple in Minneapolis, visited and preached in other places, baptized twenty-one, etc., as noticed in published report.

"1871, March 31. Sent to George W. Chase, of Georgia, one hundred dollars for the support of the mission work in Georgia. This was paid to Rev. E. P. Walton, towards his support, as missionary, in that Association. May 5-11. Visited Toledo and Napoleon, Ohio. In Toledo preached twice, baptized eighteen, confirmed four, instituted a Society of thirty-three members, of whom twenty-nine are communicants, and performed one marriage service.

"At Napoleon, preached twice, and baptized five persons."

My other duties have not allowed me to be much nor long absent from Chicago, and I have consequently made so few visits to other places. Most of the work has been done by correspondence; which, although considerable, could be done without so much interfering with my home duties.

My travelling expenses, when engaged exclusively in attending to the missionary work, I have charged to the Missionary Fund, and also the cost of stationary, circulars, and postage used. For my time the Chicago Society has made no deduction from my salary, and I have made no charge to the Missionary Fund.

You will learn more particularly of the missionary work performed in the associations named from their several reports, and it is not necessary, therefore, to repeat them here.

In response to the letters and circulars issued, various sums have been sent to the Treasurer or to myself by individuals and by societies.

The amounts received by the Treasurer, and those paid by him from the Missionary Fund on my order, appear in his report.

The following is the account of moneys received and paid out for this use by myself:

No. 8. REPORT ON THE MANUSCRIPTS OF SWEDENborg.

The Committee on the MSS. of Swedenborg reports:

That since the last meeting of the Convention, forty-one of the forty-two sets of photolithographic copies of the MSS. of Swedenborg, assigned to us in the arrangement made with the English Conference Committee on the MSS., have been received from Stockholm. These sets are, however, as yet incomplete. The two volumes of the copy of the Schmidius' Bible, with Swedenborg's notes, necessary to bring the sets up to their full complement of twelve volumes each, are still wanting. Of the cause of this deficiency the Committee has been unable to obtain a satisfactory explanation; but, as it is credibly informed that the work has been printed, it may express the confident expectation of the early arrival of the missing volumes, whereby it shall be enabled to complete the sets of the MSS. thus far published. Of the forty-two sets constituting our allotment of the MSS., the Committee has made the following disposition: Seventeen sets have been delivered to subscribers in this country, one set to a subscriber in Germany, and twenty sets to the Trustees of the Rotch Legacy Fund, in accordance with the modified terms of the agreement entered into with them by your Committee.

There are, at the disposal of the Convention, four sets, remaining after the distribution just noted, one extra copy of the Schmidius' Bible, in two volumes, and two volumes of the proof impressions of the MSS., ordered by this Committee. As the MSS. have not all been received, and as all the moneys due to the MSS. Fund have not yet been collected, the Committee asks to be continued, and empowered to complete its work.

In conclusion, your Committee would again express its sense of the great obligation under which the members of the Church are to Prof. R. L. Tafel, for the exceedingly able and faithful manner in which he has executed the difficult and laborious work of editing the photolithographic edition of the MSS. of Swedenborg, so many volumes of which are in our possession at this time, and cannot refrain from uttering the hope that he may be called upon to complete his admirable work before he again returns to this country.

Respectfully submitted,

W. H. BENADE, Chairman of Committee.

[Communication from the Vice-President in reference to the work of the Committee on the MSS. of Swedenborg.]

To the Members of the Convention :

The Convention has just heard the report of the Rev. Mr. Benade, on behalf of the Committee on the Manuscripts of Swedenborg; that Committee consists of the President, Vice-President, Rev. Samuel M. Warren, William H. Benade, and Mr. Lyman S. Burnham; but the work has been done by Mr. Benade, as has been very properly said by Mr. Worcester, the President of the Convention, in the following extract from a letter to me in regard to the

Will you do it, and say that I join with you? It is an act of justice.

I wish, therefore, in behalf of the other members of the Committee, to render an acknowledgment of our indebtedness, and that of the Convention, to Mr. Benade, for his services in this great use, and accordingly propose for adoption the following resolution:

Resolved, That the thanks of the Convention be rendered to the Rev. W. H. Benade, the chief promoter in America of the measures taken to secure copies
