THE EXCELLENCE AND SUCCESS OF THE GOSPEL:

THE heav'ns declare thy glory, LORD!
In ev'ry star thy wisdom shines;
But when our eyes behold thy word,
We read thy name in fairer lines.

II

Sun, moon, and stars, convey thy praise
Round the whole earth, and never stand;
So when thy truth began its race,
It darted light on ev'ry land.

[ocr errors]

Thy richest mercy here we view,
In minds reform'd, and sins forgiv'n;
LORD! cleanse our sins, our lives renew,
And make thy word our guide to heav'n.

IV

Nor shall thy spreading gospel rest,
Till through the world thy truth has run;
Till Christ has all the nations blest

That see the light, or feel the sun.

[merged small][ocr errors]

WHAT glory gilds the sacred page!
Majestic, like the sun,

It gives a light to ev'ry age,
It gives, but borrows none.

II

The hand that gave it, still supplies
His gracious light and heat;
His truths upon the nations rise,
They rise, but never set.

III

Let everlasting thanks be thine,
For such a bright display,

As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heav'nly day..

IV

My heart rejoices to pursue
The paths of truth and love;
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

CHRISTIAN UNITY.

I

LET angry names no more The christian world o'erspread; God's creatures all, both bond and free, Are one in Christ, their head.

II

With christian men on earth Let mutual love be found; Heirs of the same inheritance, With mutual blessings crown'd.

III

Envy and strife, begone,

Aud only kindness known,

Where all one common father have,
One common master own.

IV

Thus will the church below

Resemble that above;

Where springs of purest pleasure rise,
And every heart is love.

THE CHRISTIAN WARFARE.

I

AWAKE! my soul! lift up thine eyes;
See where thy foes against thee rise,
In long array, a num'rous host; -
Awake! my soul! or thou art lost!

II

Here, giant danger threat'ning stands,
Must'ring his pale terrific bands;
There, pleasure's silken banners spread,
And willing souls are captive led.

III

See where rebellious passions rage,
And fierce desires and lusts engage;
The meanest foe of all the train

Has thousands and ten thousands slain.

IV

Thou tread'st upon enchanted ground;
Perils and snares beset thee round;
Beware of all, guard ev'ry part,
But most, the traitor in thy heart.

V

Come then, my soul! now learn to wield
The weight of thine immortal shield;
Put on the armour from above
Of heav'nly truth, and heav'nly love.

THE AGED CHRISTIAN'S PRAYER.

I

GOD of my childhood, and my youth!
The guide of all my days!

I have discern'd thy heav'nly truth,
And seen thy wondrous ways.

II

Wilt thou forsake my hoary hairs,
And leave my fainting heart?
Who shall sustain my sinking years
If GOD, my strength, depart?

III

Let me thy pow'r and truth proclaim
To the surviving age,

And teach them to revere thy name
When I shall quit the stage.

IV

The land of silence and of death
Awaits my next remove :
O! may my last expiring breath
Declare thy boundless love!
