GOD'S UNIVERSAL CARE AND GOODNESS.

I

VAST are thy works, almighty LORD!
All nature rests upon thy word!
Thy glories in thy heav'ns we see,
And the whole earth is full of thee.

II

The various tribes of creatures stand, Waiting their portion from thy hand; And man and beast, and fish and worm, Rejoice and praise in different form.

III

But, when thy face is hid, they mourn,
And, dying, to their dust return;
Both man and beast their lives resign;
For life and being, all are thine.

IV

Yet thou canst breathe on dust again, Raise a new race of beasts and men; A word of thy creating breath Repairs the wastes of time and death.

V

Thy hand in all, O GOD! we see ;
The universe is full of thee:

Thy praises shall our breath employ;
Thy praise be our sublimest joy.

THE GREATNESS AND GOODNESS of God.

I

LONG as we live, we 'll bless thy name,
Great king! and GOD of love!
Our work and joy shall be the same,
In the bright world above.

II

Thou, LORD, art great, thy pow'r unknown,
And let thy praise be great:
We'll sing the honours of thy throne,
Thy works of love repeat.

Thy praise shall dwell upon our tongues;
And while our lips rejoice,
They who shall hear our sacred songs,
Shall join their cheerful voice.

IV

Fathers to sons chall teach thy name,
And children learn thy ways:
Ages to come thy truth proclaim,
And nations sound thy praise.

The world is govern'd by thy hands,
Thy people rul'd by love :
And thine eternal kingdom stands,
Though rocks and hills remove.

GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY, AND GOODNESS TO MAN.

I

O LORD! Our heav'nly king!

Thy name is all divine:

Thy glories round the earth are spread, And o'er the heav'ns they shine.

II

When to thy works on high We raise our wond'ring eyes, And see the moon, complete in light, Adorn the darksome skies:

III

When we survey the stars, And all their shining forms; LORD! what is man?-of mortal race, Akin to dust and worms!

IV

What is the son of man,

That he should share thy love;

That on his head thy love shou'd show'r Rich blessings from above?

V

O LORD! Our heav'nly king!
Thy name is all divine;

Thy glories round the earth are spread,
And o'er the heav'ns they shine.

ASSURANCE OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD.

I

ART thou not with us, gracious LORD!
To dissipate our fear?

Thou dost proclaim thyself our cOD,
Our GOD, for ever near!

II

Thy pow'r supreme, which form'd the earth,
And bears up all the skies,

Exerts for all its friendly aid,
When dangers round us rise.

III

Thou dost a father's bowels feel
For all the sons of men ;
And in most tender accents speak
To sooth their sad complaints.

IV

On this support we all shall lean,
And banish ev'ry care;

The gloomy vale of death shall smile
If thou be with us there.

V

While we thy gracious succour prove 'Midst all our various ways,

The darkest shades thro' which we pass, Shall echo with thy praise.

GOD'S INFLUENCE AND MAN'S RESIGNATION.

I.

THY influence, mighty GOD! is felt
'Through nature's ample round;
In heaven, on earth, through air and skies
Thine energy is found.

[ocr errors]

That sacred influence, LORD! we need
To form ourselves anew;
O cleanse our hearts from ev'ry fin,
And thy salvation shew!

III

Father of lights! assistance grant
To guide our doubtful way;
Thy truth shall scatter ev'ry cloud,
And make a glorious day.

IV

Supported by thy heav'nly aid,
We'll do and bear thy will;
Thy love shall make each burthen light,
And ev'ry murmur still.

V

Cheer'd by thy smiles, we'll fearless tread
The gloomy paths of death;

And, with the hopes of endless bliss,
Resign, to thee, our breath.
