The parties shall then engage themselves to each

other in this manner :

The minister, receiving the woman at her father's or friend's hands, shall cause the man with his right-hand to take the woman by her righthand, and to say after him as follows;

wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, according to GOD's holy ordinance, and the laws of this land, till death do separate us.

They shall then loose their hands, and the woman with her right-hand taking the man by his right-hand, shall likewise say after the minister;

I DE― take thee A― B― to be my wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, according to GOD'S holy ordinance, and the laws of this land, till death do separate us.

They shall again loose their hands, and the man shall put a ring upon the fourth finger of the woman's left-hand. And the man, bolding the ring there, shall say;

WITH this ring I thee wed; and I do proinise to attach myself to thee only, so long as we both shall live. Amen.

ག Both kneeling down, the minister shall fay;

Let us pray.

O ETERNAL GOD! creator and preserver of all mankind! bestow thy blessing upon these thy servants, this man and this woman, that they may faithfully observe and perform the engagement and covenant mutually made between them; and live in perfect peace and love together, agreeably to Christ. Amen. the gospel of our lord Jesus Christ.

The minister shall then join their right-hands together, and say ;

THOSE WHOM GOD hath permitted to le joined together in holy matrimony, let 10 man put asunder.

Then

Then shall the minister declare as follows;

FORASMUCH as A- B- and Dhave consented to live together in holy matrimony, and have witnessed the same before GOD, and this company, and have engaged and pledged themselves each to the other, and have declared the same by giving and receiving a ring, and by joining hands; I pronounce that they be man and wife together. Amen.

The minister.

Let us pray.

OUR FATHER! who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us, day by day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those, who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen,

Minister.

Minister. O JEHOVAH! bless these thy

servants:

Answer. Who put their trust in thee. Minister. Preserve them from all evil; Answer. And evermore defend them. Minister, O JEHOVAH! hear our petition; Answer. And let our prayer come unto thee.

Minister.

O MERCIFUL GOD and heavenly father! bless, we pray thee, these thy servants, and lead them to practise whatsoever they shall profitably learn from thy holy word, that they may not only know, but do, thy will. And, if it shall be thy good pleasure to raise unto them a family, grant that they may live so long together in true love and honesty, that they may see their children virtuously brought up in the christian, religion, and, that, finally, they, together with them, may become inheritors of thine everlasting kingdom, promised unto all thy faithful and obedient servants, by Jesus Christ our lord. Amen.

He shall then add this blessing;

MAY GOD almighty protect and preserve you; may he mercifully look upon you with his favour; and may ye so live together in this life, that, in the world to come, ye may inherit life everlasting. Amen.

Exhortation to the parties after marriage.

IT will become you to consider seriously the sacred and important engagement into which you have now entered. Marriage is the union of one man with one woman, and was ordained for the advancement of their mutual happiness, for the better continuance of the human kind, and for the more religious and virtuous education of children. It was intended, by the benevolent parent of mankind, to be a source of the purest satisfactions; to soften the unavoidable cares, and to increase the innocent pleasures of life, by affording the oppor tunity of sharing them with a most intimate friend and partner.
