all the day long, when those who seek to do me evil are abashed, and brought to shame.

[blocks in formation]

Give thy judgment, o god! to the king; and thy righteousness to the king's son:

2 Then shall he judge thy people with righteousness, and thine oppressed with equity; that the mountains and hills may bring forth peace for the people.

3 Then shall be with justice vindicate the oppressed among the people, and shall save the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor.

4 Generation after generation shall reverence him, so long as the sun and the moon endure.

5 Like as the dew is unto the shorn herbage, and as the small rain that enricheth the soil ;

6 So shall righteousness flourish in his days ; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.

7 He shall bear rule from sea to sea, and from the river to the utmost limits of the land:

8 The inhabitants of the wilderness shall bow down before him, and his enemies shall bite the dust :

9 The kings of Tarshish, and of the isles shall bring an offering ; the kings of Arabia and Saba shall present a gift :

10 All kings shall prostrate themselves before him; all nations shall serve him :

11 For he shall defend the distressed when he crieth, and the afflicted when there is no one to help him.

12 He shall protect the poor and the distressed, and save the lives of the afflicted :

13 He shall rescue their life from deceit and violence, and their blood shall be precious in his sight.

14. He shall live, and gold from Arabia shall be given unto him: prayer shall be offered continually for him, and he shall be blessed daily.

15 Plenty of corn shall be on the earth ; its fruit shall wave, like the cedars of Lebanon, on the top of the mountains; and the inhabitants of the city shall flourish, like the grass of the earth. 16 His name shall continue for ever;

;

his name shall endure as long as the sun : all the tribes of the earth shall be blessed through him, and all nations shall pronounce him happy. 17 Praised be veHOVAH,

GOD of Israel ! who alone doth wonderful things :

18 And praised be his glorious name for éver; and all the earth shall be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen.

PSALM LXXIII.

TRULY GOD is good unto Israel ; unto such as are pure in heart.

2 Nevertheless, my feet had well nigh slipped; my steps had almost failed;

3 For I was jealous of the profane, and admired the prosperity of the wicked :

4 For they had no diseases unto the time of their death; their strength was firm and perfect.

5 They were not subject to trouble like other men ; neither were they afflicted like other people :

6 Therefore, pride banged about them like a chain, and violence clothed them like a garment.

7 Their

7 Their wickedness proceeded from their fullness ; in this they surpassed the imaginations of their own heart.

8 They proudly scoffed, and talked of mischief; they spake of oppression with haughtiness.

9 They set their mouth against the hea: vens ; and their tongue ranged through the earth.

10 Therefore, his people turned unto them, and from thence they reaped no small advantage:

11 And they said ; “How should GOD perceive it? Is there knowledge in the most

12 Lo! such are the wicked, who prosper in the world, and heap up riches.

13 Then I said ; “Surely it is in vain I purify mine heart, and wash mine hands in innocency; seeing I am afflicted all day long, and chastened every morning." 14 If I should say ;

"I will reason with these men;" lo! then I should deal deceitfully with the generation of thy children.

I therefore studied to understand this, but it was too difficult for me.

16 At length, I went into the sanctuary of God; and then I learned their latter end:

17 That thou dost set them in slippery places ; and castest them down into destruction.

18 Oh, how soon do they become an horror and a desolation ! Horv soon are they utterly consumed with terrors !

19 Like the images of a dream, when one awaketh, so thou, O JEHOVAH! makest the image of them to vanish.

25 Thus mine heart was grieved, and I was troubled in my reins ;

21 I was stupid, and I was ignorant; I was as a brute before thee.

22 Nevertheless, I was all the while under thy care; thou didst hold my righthand;

23 Thou didst lead me with thy counsel; and afterward didst receive me with honour.

24 Whom can I compare to thee in heaven? and on earth I delight in none inore than in thee. 25 Though my flesh and nine heart
