obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness and mercy. And as we ought, each of us, to make confession of our guilt and unworthiness, in our acts of private devotion; so ought we jointly to do, when we assemble and meet together,—to render thanks unto him, who is the creator and preserver of all, for the great benefits we have received at his hands,-to set forth his most worthy praise,-to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore, I beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me, with a pure heart and humble voice, in supplication to almighty GOD; saying

after me;

¶ General confession to be said by the whole congregation, after the minister.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful father! we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep; we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts; we have offended against thy holy laws; we have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done

those

those things which we ought not to have done. But, we entreat thee, O GOD! to have mercy upon us, thine offending creatures. Spare thou those, who confess their faults; restore thou those, who are truly penitent; according to thy promises declared unto mankind in the gospel of Jesus Christ our lord. And grant, o most merciful father! that we may, in future, live a virtuous and religious life, agreeably to thy holy word. Amen.

Minister.

ALMIGHTY GOD! unto whom all hearts are open, all desires are known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; purify the thoughts of our hearts, that we inay truly love thee, and worthily praise thy holy name, now and for ever. Amen.

OUR FATHER! who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us, day by day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those, who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil : for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Minister.

Minister. Raise our hearts unto thee,

O GOD !

Answer. thy praise.

And our tongues shall speak

Then shall be read a psalm or psalms, at the discretion and appointment of the minister, concluding the whole with one of the following doxologies;

Now unto JEHOVAH! immortal, invisible, the only GOD;

Answer. Be honour and glory, through the gospel of Jesus Christ, for ever. Amen. Or this:

Glory be unto the king immortal, invisible, the only GOD;

Answer. For unto thee, o JEHOVAH ! it is eternally due; and may thy great name be glorified throughout all the world, for ever. Amen.

¶Then shall be read a lesson, taken out of the Old Testament; after which, the three following psalms.

Psalm 1.

HAPPY is the man who walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, nor continueth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the company of scorners;

2 But whose delight is in the law of JEHOVAH; and who, in his law, exerciseth himself day and night.

3 For, he is like a tree planted by the water side, that bringeth forth its fruit in due season;

4 Whose leaf also withereth not; for whatsoever he doth, shall prosper.

5 But, it is not so with the wicked; they are like the chaff which the wind disperseth.

6 Therefore, the wicked will not be able to stand in judgment; neither sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

7 For, JEHOVAH approveth the way of the righteous; but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalm VIII.

O JEHOVAH! Our GOD! how glorious is thy name through the whole earth; which resoundeth thy praise to the heavens !

2 From the mouths even of babes and sucklings thou derivest strength against thine enemies; so as to silence the enemy, and the self-avenger.

3 When I behold the heavens, the work

of thy fingers; and the moon and the stars, which thou hast created;

4 "What is mortal man, I say, that thou shouldst be mindful of him? What, the son of man that thou shouldst attend to him?"

5 Thou hast placed him but little lower than the angels; and hast crowned himn with glory and honour.

6 Thou hast given him dominion overthe works of thine hands; thou hast subjected every thing to his power:

7 All sheep and oxen; yea, the beasts of the field:

8 The fowls of the air, and the fish of the sea; and whatsoever passeth the paths of the waters.

9 O JEHOVAH! our GOD! how glorious is thy name through the whole earth!

Psalm xv.

O JEHOVAH! Who shall sojourn in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell upon thine holy mountain?

2 He who leadeth an uncorrupt life, and doeth justice, and speaketh the truth from his heart:
