because of thy displeasure; nor rest in my bones, because of my sin.

4 For mine iniquities hang over mine. head; they are like an heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.

5 My wounds are become loathsome and offensive, because of mine own folly.

6 My body is exceedingly bowed down; I go about mourning all the day long:

7 For my bowels are full of burning heat; and there is no sound part in my body..

8 I am enfeebled, and greatly reduced; I cry aloud from the agitation of mine heart.

9 Thou knowest, O JEHOVAH! all my desires; and my sighs are not hidden from thee.

10 Mine heart panteth, my strength faileth me; and the sight of mine eyes is gone from me.

II 11 They, who were my familiar friends, now keep at a distance from my wounds; even my kinsmen stand far aloof.

12 While they who seek my life lay snares for me; and they who seek my ruin, speak mischievous and deceitful words against me all the day long.

13 But as for me, I am like a deaf man, who heareth not; and like a dumb man, who openeth not his mouth.

14 I behave like one who heareth nothing; or who hath not a mouth to refute their calumnies.

15 For in thee, O JEHOVAH! I place my trust; thou wilt answer for me, O JEHOVAH! my GOD!

16 "Lest (said I) they rejoice over me; and exult at the slipping of my foot; for i am just ready to totter."

17 Yet my sorrow is constantly before me; for mine iniquity I have confessed, and I am grieved for my sin.

18 But mine enemies live and prosper; and those who hate me without cause multiply.

19 Those who repay me evil for good, accuse me falsely; because I follow that which is good.

20 Forsake me not, O JEHOVAH ! be not, my GOD! far distant from me.

I SAID: "I will take heed unto my ways, that I offend not with my tongue. 2" I will keep my mouth, as it were with a bridle, while the wicked are in my sight." 3 So I was dumb, and remained in silence; I refrained from speaking even what was good, but my sorrow increased:

4. Mine heart grew hot within me; at last, the heat increased, and I spoke with my tongue, and said:

"Make known unto me, o JEHOVAH! mine end, and how short the number of my days, that I may know how perishable I am.

6" Lo! thou hast made my days, as it were, a span long, and mine age is even as nothing before thee: surely, every man, at best, is altogether vanity.

7 Surely, man walketh after a shadow, and needlessly disquieteth himself; he accumulateth riches, but knoweth not who shall inherit them.

8" What then, O JEHOVAH ! is mine hope? Truly, my whole hope is from thee. 9 "Oh! acquit me from all my trans

gressions; and suffer me not to be the reproach of the fool.

10 "I was silent, and opened not my mouth; because thou so ordainedst it.

11" But remove thy chastisement from me; I am consumed by a stroke of thine hand.

12 "When thou correctest man for iniquity, thou makest his desirable things to consume like a cancer; surely, every man is altogether vanity.

13 "Hear my supplication, O JEHOVAH! incline thine ear unto my cry; be not regardless of my tears.

14" For I am a stranger with thee; a sojourner, like all my forefathers.

15 "O spare me! that I may recover my strength before I go hence, and be no

more seen."

PSALM XL.

I HAVE stedfastly looked up to JEHOVAH ; and he hath listened unto me, and heard my cry.

2 He hath brought me out of the pit of misery, out of the mire and clay; and set my

sure.

3 He hath put into my mouth a new song; a song of praise to our GOD: that many may see, and revere, and place their trust in JEHOVAH.

4 Happy is the man who maketh JE HOVAH his confidence; and who looketh not for help unto the proud, or unto the favourers of imposture.

5 Many, O JEHOVAH ! Our GOD! are the wonderful works which thou hast done; and thy kind providences toward us cannot be enumerated.

6 I would declare and rehearse them; but they are more than can be enumerated.

7 Yet for this, thou desirest not sacrifice, nor oblation; burnt offering and sin-offering thou requirest not: but thou hast opened mine ears that I should hearken unto. thy voice.

8 Then I said: "Lo! I come to do thy will; in the volume it is prescribed to me, to do what is pleasing unto thee, O JEHO VAH!" This is my delight, for thy law is within mine heart.
