PSALM XV. In the Evening prayer, p. 28. PSALM XVI. PRESERVE me, o GOD! for in thee I place my trust. 2 I have said unto JEHOVAH; "Thou art my sovereign lord: I expect no good thing but from thee." 3 But as for those profane earthly idols; and all the great who delight in them: 4 Let their sorrows be multiplied; and backward let them speed: 5 But, as for me, their libations of blood I will not pour out; neither will I mention their names within my lips. 6 O JEHOVAH! the portion of mine heritage and of my cup! thou art he who maketh me secure. 7 My lot is fallen to me in a pleasant place; delightful is the heritage that hath devol ed u on me. 8 I will thank JEHOVAH, who consulteth my my good; even, by night, he is the object of my desires. 9 I ever place JEHOVAH before me; while he is at my right-hand, I cannot be moved. 10 Therefore, my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoiceth: my whole flesh resteth in security; 11 For, thou wilt not leave my life in the grave; neither wilt thou suffer thy pious-one to see corruption : 12 But to me thou wilt make known the path of life; fulness of joy in thy presence, and perpetual pleasures at thy right-hand. PSALM XVII. HEAR, just JEHOVAH! consider my complaint; listen unto my prayer made with unfeigned lips. 2 Let my sentence proceed from thee; let thine eyes discern what is right. 3 Thou hast tried mine heart, thou hast searched it by night; thou hast tried me thoroughly but hast not found any wicked thought within me. 4 I have never approved the misdeeds of other men: according to thy word I have avoided the ways of the violent man. 5 Support thou my steps in thy paths; that my feet may never slip. 6 I invoke thee, O GOD! because thou art wont to hear me ; incline thine ear, and hearken unto me: 7 Show thy wonderful loving-kindness, o! thou who savest those who place their trust in thee, from those who rise up against them. 8 Guard me, as the tender apple of the eye; hide me under the shadow of thy wings, 9 From the wicked, who would destroy me; and from mine enemies, who encompass me about to take away iny life. 10 They have hardened their hearts; and speak arrogantly with their mouth: 11 They lie waiting for us on every side; they design to level us with the ground; 12 Like a lion that is greedy of his prey; like a young lion that lurketh in covert places. 13 Arise, O JEHOVAH! disappoint him, and and humble him; defend me by thy sword, from the wicked man. 14 Defend me by thine hand, O JEHOVAH! from such men; from men of the world, whose portion is in this life, and whom thou hast filled with rare things; 15 Who are blessed with a numerous progeny; and who lay by their riches for their children! let me, 16 But, as for me, in innocence, enjoy thy presence: I shall be satisfied with the re-appearance of thy countenance. PSALM XVIII. I WILL love thee, O JEHOVAH! my strength; JEHOVAH, my rock, my fortress, and my refuge: my GOD! my rock in whom I trust; my shield, the horn also of my salvation, and mine elevated tower! 2 I invoked JEHOVAH, who is worthy to be praised; and I was preserved from mine enemies. 3 When the billows of death encom passed me; and the torrents of impiety rushed upon me; 4 When the toils of the grave were en M 4 folding folding me, and the snares of death were spread before me : 5 In my distress I invoked JEHOVAH ; and cried aloud unto my GOD. 6 From his temple he listened unto my voice; and my cry entered into his ears. 7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and rocked, because he was wroth. 8 A smoke issued from his nostrils, and a devouring flame from his mouth; which enkindled flakes of fire. 9 He bent the heavens, and descended; and a thick cloud was under his feet. 10 He rode upon a cherub, and did fly : he flew swiftly on the wings of the wind. II He placed darkness around him as a covert; dark waters and thick clouds were his pavilion. 12 But from the splendour of his presence the clouds were dispelled; and flakes of fire were kindled. 13 JEHOVAH thundered from the heavens; the most high uttered his voice: 14 He shot and scattered his arrows; he multiplied and dispersed his lightnings. 15 The channels of the sea were then feen, |
