MORNING AND EVENING HYMNS. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray and cry aloud; and he shall hear my voice. Psalm lv. 17.

Hymn 235. C. M.

Hy voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord. Psaim v. 3.

AWAKE, my soul, to meet the day;

Unfold thy drowsy eyes,

And burst the pond'rous chain that loads
Thine active faculties.

God's guardian shield was round me spread,
In my defenceless sleep:
Let him have all my waking hours,
Who doth my slumbers keep.

Pardon, O God, my former sloth,
And arm my soul with grace;
As rising now, I seal my vows
To prosecute thy ways.

Bright Sun of Righteousness, arise;
Thy radiant beams display,
And guide my dark bewilder'd soul
To everlasting day.

Hymn 236. C. M.

he darkness and the light are both alike to thee. Psalm cxxxix. 12.

THE

HE veil of night is now withdrawn,
And day salutes our eyes:

Fatigu'd and spent we laid us down,
Refresh'd and strong we rise.

2 Safe guarded by th' Almighty's arm,
Securely we have slept!

While he, who never sleeps, from harm Our senseless bodies kept.

3 Come then, let's early thanks repay
To him who never sleeps:

He shades the night, he gilds the day;
Our sleeping dust he keeps.

4 Let's live to him whose quick'ning voice A dying life prolongs;

As daily he renews our joys,

Let us repeat our songs.

Hymn 237.

C

M.

I myself will awake early. Psalm Ivii. 8.

[ocr errors]

To thee let my first off'rings rise,
Whose sun creates the day;

Swift as his glad'ning influence flies,
And spotless as his ray.

2 This day thy favouring hand be nigh,
So oft vouchsaf'd before!

Still may it lead, protect, supply!
And I that hand adore!

3 If bliss thy providence impart;
For which, resign'd, I pray ;
Give me to feel the grateful heart!
And without guilt be gay!

4 Affliction, should thy love intend,
As vice or folly's cure;

Patient to gain that gracious end,
May I the means endure.

5 Be this, and every future day,
Still wiser than the past!
And when I all my life survey,
May grace sustain at last.

Hymn 238. S. M.

Which giveth the sun for a light by day.
Jer. xxxi. 35.

EE how the morning sun
Pursues his shining way;

And wide proclaims his Maker's praise,
With every bright'ning ray.

2 Thus would my rising soul
Its heavenly Parent sing;
And to its great Original
The humble tribute bring.

3 Serene I laid me down,

Beneath his guardian care; I slept, and I awoke, and foun My kind Preserver near!

4 My life I would anew

Devote, O Lord, to thee:

And in thy service I would spend
A blest eternity.

Hymn 239. P. M.

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. Psalm lxxxiv. 10.

1LORD, I am vile; what shall I say?

I live to see another day;

O let me live to thee!

A thousand years to hope for this,
Should be unutterable bliss:

What must fruition be?

2 Eye bath not seen, nor ear hath beard,
What Jesus hath for us prepar'd,
Nor can the heart conceive:
Thou hast commanded me, to-day
To live by faith, and I'll obey,
Lord, help me to believe.

Hymn 240. C. M.

And the Lord shall cover him all the day long. and he shall dwell between his shoulders. Deut. xxxiii. 12.

HOSANNA, with a cheerful sound,

God's upholding hand :

Ten thousand snares attend us round,
And yet secure we stand.

2 That was a most amazing power,
That rais'd us with a word,

And every day, and every hour
We lean upon the Lord.

3 The rising morning can't assure,
That we shall end the day!

For death stands ready at the door,
To seize our lives away.

4 God is our sun, whose daily light
Our joy and safety brings;
Our feeble flesh lies safe at night,
Beneath his shady wings.

Hymn 241. C. M.

I will both lay me down in peace and sleep. Psaim iv. 8.

GRE

REAT Sov'reign, let my ev'ning song,
Like holy incense rise;

Assist the off'rings of my tongue,

To reach the lofty skies.

2 Through all the dangers of the day,
Thy hand was still my guard,
And still, to drive my wants away,
Thy wercy stood prepar'd.

3 Perpetual blessings from above,
Encompass me around,

But ob! how few returns of love
Hath my Creator found.

4 What have I done for him that died
To save my wretched soul?
How are my follies multiplied,
Fast as my minutes roll?

5 Lord, with this guilty heart of mine,
To thy dear cross I flee;

And to thy grace my soul resign,
To be renew'd by thee.
