Exod. Day on which God deliver'd the Law xix. II.
from Mount Sinai ; as it was that, on which the Holy Ghost condescended to di
tate the Gospel to the Apostles; and, in them to the whole World. of When the day of Pentecoste was fully come, they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.
Worthy therefore is this Day to be observ'd by us Christians with a joyful Solemnity. Those of the primitive Times had such a Respect for it, that the general Baptism of their new Converts (unless in any urgent Cafe) was deferr’d to that Season, and then celebrated: when great Numbers of the Candidates, as they might properly be call’d, presented themselves at the Baptistery, cloath'd in white Robes; whence it got the Name of WhitSunday, which it still retains.

S E C T. XI.
The Feast of TRUMPET S. The next Feast was the Feast of Trumpets, to be kept upon the first Day of the : Month Ethanim or Tisri (September.)
Concerning which, the Law directs thus. i In the seventh month, in the first day of the Levit.
xxiii, 24 | month, all ye have a sabbath, a memorial Ć of blowing trumpets, an holy convocation.
Ye Mall do no servile work therein; but ye Jhall offer an offering made by fire unto the i
LORD. Which, as it was a Memorial, 1 and consequently a Commemoration of t some extraordinary past Transaction, might
probably be that of the Deliverance of Ifaac from being sacrific'd, by the divine Interposition of a ram, caught by his horns Gen. in a thicket; it being likely that these Trumpets were made of the Horns of that Creature; as we find those were which the seven Priests were order'd to sound in their Josh. vi, Procession before the Ark of the Covenant, seven Times round the Walls of Jericho. But this is only Conjecture.
Whatever the Reason of this Institution was; it seems, not to have been an Ap
pointment then newly made, but a Confirmation of some old Festival; the Occafion of which might be so well known among them, that it was not necessary to mention it. This Festival is alluded to by the Psalmist, where he says, † Blow up the trumpet in the new-moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feaft-day. For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. This be ordained in Joseph for a testimony, &c.
SEC T. XI.
The Day of ATON E MEN T. The next great Holy Day, is the Day of Atonement; being a general Fast, upon account of all their Sins and Transgressions committed the rest of the Year; and particularly to deprecate the divine Justice; which might otherwise punish them with divers Diseases ; that Season of the Year being, in most Countreys, very * fickly.
+ Psalm lxxxi. 3, &c. Hammond upon the Place, applies all this to the ordinary Observation of the monthly New-Moon; which was little more than a common Week-Day. Whereas it is call'd a solemn Feast-day, a notable extraordinary Day of Festival, render'd by the Septuagint, tuonu vuées sostňs, as the Feast of Trumpets was.
The Injunction for observing it, runs 2, thus. Also, on the tenth day of this seventh
Month, (September) there shall be a day
of atonement ; it shall be an holy convocation un Levit. I to you ; and ye shall afliet your souls, and offer 27, &c. I an offering made by fire unto the Lord. It shall i be unto you a fabbath of reft, and ye shall afflict
your souls (by fasting and abstaining from the Enjoyment of the good things of this Life) in the ninth day of the month, at Even: from Even unto Even fall ye celebrate your sabbath. It was injoyn'd before in these ib. xvi. Words. And this shall be a statute for ever unto you; That, in tbe seventh month,
the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all; For, on that day, Mall the Priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that
be clean from all your fins before the LORD. For chis was the Day on which the HighPriest enter'd yearly into the most Holy Place, with a Censer of Incense; and afterwards turn'd the Scape-Goat loose : of which we Thall speak somewhat more in its Place.

S E C T. XIIÍ.
The Feast of TABERNACÍ E S. After this comes, the Feast of Tabernacles; the last of the Three Great Festivals of the Year. This was appointed in Commemoration of God's Mercies to them, all the while they dwelt in the Wilder
ness, in Tents or Tabernacles. Of which Levit. the Law speaks thus; The fifteenth day of xxiii . 34, this seventh month shall be the feast of Ta
bernacles for seven days unto the LORD. On the first day, shall be an holy convocation, ye shall do no servile work therein. Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you, ye Mall offer an offering made by fire unto the LO'R D, it is a solemn assembly, and ye shall do no servile work therein.
At the same Time was likewise to be kept the Feaft of the In-gathering ; or a Thanksgiving for their having gather'd in the Fruits of the Earth, of all kinds. Also, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when
