BOOK III.

The Holy Ghost.

CHAPTER I.

The Divine titles of the Holy Ghost.

1. And he (Moses) called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us or not? Exodus xvii. 7. The Apostle, exhorting the Jews to believe in Christ, thus refers to the above event,―The Holy Ghost saith (Psalms xcv. 7-8), To day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness : when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works. Hebrews iii. 7-9.

2. The voice of the Lord (Isaiah vi. 8) is described by Paul (Acts xxviii. 25) to be the Holy Ghost speaking by Esaias the prophet. Again, it is written, 2 Timothy iii. 16, All Scripture is given by inspiration of God; which is thus expressed in 2 Peter i. 21: Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

3. Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Peter said unto her (Sapphira), How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Acts v. 3, 4, 9.

4. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy, for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Corinthians iii. 16, 17. See also 1 Corinthians vi. 19.

5 a. The Spirit of the Lord, may be read thus, The Lord the Spirit (marg. ref.). 2 Corinthians iii. 18.

56. The Lord (the Spirit, the Sanctifier, 2 Thessalonians ii. 13) is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. The Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ. 2 Thessalonians iii. 3, 5.

6. Who (Christ) through the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God. Hebrews ix. 14.

CHAPTER II.

The relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Father and the Son.

1 a. The Comforter, Which is the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My (Christ's) name. John xiv. 26.

1 b. When the Comforter is come, Whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth, Which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me (Christ). John xv. 26.

1c. It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you. (Jesus to His disciples.) John xvi. 7.

1 d. Again, the Saviour to His disciples just before His ascension,-Behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you. Luke xxiv. 49.

2a. Jesus said unto them His disciples), Peace be unto you, as My Father hath sent Me, even so send I you. And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. John xx. 21, 22.

2 b. He (Jesus) through the Holy Ghost gave commandments unto the Apostles whom He had chosen. Acts i. 2.

3. He is called The Spirit of Jesus Christ, in Philippians i. 19; and again, The Spirit of Christ, in 1 Peter i. 11.

CHAPTER III.

Through the agency of His Spirit, God works in nature (1—3), and effects the mental enlightenment of man (4-13 c), and his personal guidance (14-20 e).

1 a. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Genesis i. 2.

16. By His Spirit He hath garnished the heavens. Job xxvi. 13.

1 c. The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Job xxxiii. 4.

1 d. Thou sendest forth Thy Spirit, they (all the creatures of God's hand) are created: and Thou renewest the face of the earth. Psalm civ. 30.

1e. The angel said unto her (Mary, v. 34), The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, and therefore also that Holy Thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke i. 35.

2. God also bearing them (that had heard the Lord speak, v. 3) witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His own will. Hebrews ii. 4.

3. The arrival of the Israelites in the Land of Promise is
