HYMN 530

(Capetown)

ESU, in Thy dying woes,

Even while Thy life-blood flows, Craving pardon for Thy foes;

Hear us, Holy Jesu.

Saviour, for our pardon sue,
When our sins Thy pangs renew,
For we know not what we do;

Hear us, Holy Jesu.

Oh may we, who mercy need,
Be like Thee, in heart and deed,
When with wrong our spirits bleed;
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

SILENT MEDITATION AND
PRAYER
I

LET

ET us meditate on our Saviour's Agony of mind, when His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.-S. Luke xxii. 24.

O

SILENCE

Let us pray.

LORD Jesu Christ, the Good Shepherd, Who dost feed and purify Thy sheep with Thy own most precious Blood; May this my meditation on Thine Agony and Bloody Sweat move me to sincere repentance for all

my sins, and may the thought of Thy Passion be for comfort and salvation to me and to all Thy faithful people; this I pray for Thy most tender Mercy's sake. Amen.

[ocr errors]

LORD, Who hast taught us that all our doings without charity are nothing worth; send Thy Holy Ghost,. and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whosoever liveth is counted dead before Thee. Grant this for Thine only Son Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

MOST beloved Lord Jesus Christ,

Who for love of me didst suffer agonies on the Cross, that Thou mightest by Thy sufferings pay the debt of my sins ; and even in that hour of Thy Passion didst pray for my pardon from God's eternal justice, have mercy on all Christians in the hour of death, and on me in my last agony. Through the merits of Thy most Precious Blood, shed for our salvation, give me a true and deep sorrow for my sins, and grant that at the hour of my death I may in peace and confidence breathe out my soul into the bosom of thine infinite mercy. Amen.

Our Father, etc.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

MY God, I believe in Thee, I hope
MY love Thee, and I grieve

that I have so often wounded Thee by my sins. Amen.

FIRST PENITENTIAL PSALM
Domine, ne in furore (Ps. 6).

LORD, rebuke me not in Thine indignation: neither chasten me in Thy displeasure.

Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am weak: Ŏ Lord, heal me, for my bones are vexed.

My soul also is sore troubled : but, Lord, how long wilt Thou punish me? Turn Thee, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O save me for Thy mercy's sake.

For in death no man remembereth Thee and who will give Thee thanks in the pit ?

I am weary of my groaning; every night wash I my bed and water my couch with my tears.

My beauty is gone for very trouble: and worn away because of all mine enemies.

Away from me, all ye that work vanity for the Lord hath heard the

voice of my weeping.

The Lord hath heard my petition : the Lord will receive my prayer.

All mine enemies shall be confounded, and sore vexed: they shall be turned back, and put to shame suddenly. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

ROCE

HYMN 336

Ret of hide myself in Thee;
OCK of ages, cleft for me,

Let the water and the blood,
From Thy side, a healing flood,
Be of sin the double cure,

Save from wrath, and make me pure.

Should my tears for ever flow,
Should my zeal no languor know,
All for sin could not atone,
Thou must save, and Thou alone;
In my hand no price I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyelids close in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

THE SECOND WORD

'To-day shalt thou be with Me in Paradise.'
