Thus Saviour to Thy Passion go,
Arrayed in Royalty of woe,
Assumed for sinners here below-
Hosanna in the Highest.

Go, Saviour, thus to triumph borne,
Thy crown shall be a wreath of thorn,
Thy royal garb a robe of scorn-
Hosanna in the Highest.

The reed Thy sceptre mock must be, Thy Throne the Cross of Calvary, Where Thou shalt reign from off the Tree

Hosanna in the Highest.

Then the Mass begins, and, during the Passion and the Gospel all hold branches in their hands.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY and Everlasting God,

ALM of Thy tender love towards

mankind hast sent Thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon Him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the example of His great humility; Mercifully grant, that we may both follow the example of His patience, and also be made partakers of His Resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth, &c. R. Amen.

And this Collect only is said.

The Epistle. Phil. 3.

ET this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men : and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a Name which is above every name (here genuflect); that at the Name of

Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Gradual. Ps. 73.

HOU hast holden me by my right hand: Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel and after that receive me with glory, V. Truly God is loving unto Israel: even unto such as are of a clean heart. Nevertheless, my feet were almost gone: my treadings had well-nigh slipt and why? I was grieved at the wicked: I do also see the ungodly in such prosperity.

The Tract. Ps. 22.

MY God, my God, look upon me:

Μ

why hast Thou forsaken me? V. And art so far from my health; and from the words of my complaint? V. O my God, I cry in the daytime, but Thou hearest not: and in the night season also I take no rest. V. And Thou continuest holy: O thou worship of Israel. Our fathers hoped in Thee: they trusted in Thee, and Thou didst deliver them. V. They called upon Thee, and were holpen : they put their trust in Thee, and were not confounded. V. But as for me, I am a worm, and no man; a very scorn

of men, and the outcast of the people. V. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying: V. He trusted in God, that He would deliver him let Him deliver him, if He will have him. V. They stand staring and looking upon me: they part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. V. Save me from the lion's mouth Thou hast heard me also from among the horns of the unicorns. V. O praise the Lord, ye that fear Him: magnify Him, all ye of the seed of Jacob. V. They shall be counted unto the Lord for a generation; they shall come, and the heavens shall declare His righteousness: unto a people that shall be born, whom the Lord hath made.

The Passion begins at once. Cleanse my heart is not said, nor is a blessing asked, and lights and incense are not used; neither is The Lord be with you said, nor the response, Glory be to Thee, O Lord, and in announcing the Passion the sign of the cross is not made. This usage maintains throughout Holy Week. The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. St. Matthew 26 and 27.

AND

AND it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said unto His disciples, Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of Man is

betrayed to be crucified. C. Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill Him. But they said, S. Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people. C. Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, there came unto Him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on His head, as He sat at meat. But when His disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, S. To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. C. When Jesus understood it, He said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon Me. For ye have the poor always with you; but Me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on My body, she did it for My burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. C. Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, S. What will ye give me, and I will deliver Him
