TO THE COUNTESS O F PEMBROKE and MONTGOMERY, BARONESS HERBERT, &c. &c. &c. MADAM, THE HE following letters relating to Swifferland, naturally claim your Ladyfhip's protection; for they were written while I had the honour of accompanying Lord HERBERT upon his travels. I feel myself A 2 myself highly flattered, therefore, in having the permiffion of inscribing them to your Ladyship, and of thus publicly acknowledging that I am, with great refpect, ADVERTISEMENT. THE following letters were written merely as a private tribute of friendship, and without the least view of their paffing from the hands of the gentleman to whom they are addressed, into any other but those of the Author's most intimate connections. To the latter they were accordingly communicated; and it was folely in compliance with their unanimous, though perhaps too partial, opinion, that he confented to commit them to the prefs. For that purpose a revifal of them became neceffary; in the courfe of which he availed himfelf of every means in his power, to render them lefs unworthy of public infpection: and he feels a juft pride in acknowledging, that he has received much additional information from feveral of his literary acquaintance in Swifferland; that by Captain Floyd's obliging communication of the very accurate journal he kept during their joint tour, he has been enabled to infert Several material circumstances which had either flipped his memory, or escaped his obfervation; and that it is owing to the judicious animadverfions of fome other of his ingenious friends, that these sheets do not appear with all their original imperfections.
