From the xxix. Psalm of David. 1 YE that in might and power excel, His wondrous power to all declare. Where he's with solemn state adored. PSALM 25. C. M. From the xxx. Psalm of David. 1 IN my distress to GOD I cried, Who kindly did relieve, And from the grave's expecting mouth 20 to his courts, ye saints of his, 8 His wrath has but a moment's reign, His favor no decay; The night of grief is recompensed 4 Therefore, O LORD, I'll gladly sing From the xxxi. Psalm of David. 1 DEFEND me, LORD, from shame, As just and righteous is thy Name, 2 Bow down thy gracious ear, 3 To thee, the GOD of truth, (For thou preserv'st me from my youth,) I willingly resign. 4 My hope, my steadfast trust, Thy wisdom times them all; 6 The brightness of thy face 7 How great thy mercies are 8 O all ye saints, the LORD With eager love pursue; gain'd, No more in judgment to appear; Whose guilt remission has obtain'd, And whose repentance is sincere. 2 No sooner I my wound disclosed, The guilt that tortured me within, But thy forgiveness interposed, And mercy's healing balm pour'd in. 3 Sorrows on sorrows multiplied, The harden'd sinner shall confound But them who in His truth confide, Blessings of mercy shall surround. 4 His saints, that have perform'd his laws 1 LET all the just to GOD, with joy, 2 Let harps, and psalteries, and lutes, 3 For faithful is the word of GOD; 5 Let earth, and all that dwell therein, Before him trembling stand; For, when he spake the word, 't was made, "T was fix'd at his command. 1 APPROACH, ye children of the LORD, 2 Let him who length of life desires, 3 The crooked paths of vice decline, 4 The LORD from heaven beholds the just With favorable eyes; And, when distress'd, his gracious ear 5 But turns his wrathful look on those 6 Deliv'rance to his saints he gives 7 Great troubles may afflict the just, 8 The wicked, from their wickedness, Whilst righteous men, whom they detest, Shall them and their's survive. 9 For GoD preserves the souls of those To them, and their posterity, PSALM 30. L. M. From the xxxvi. Psalm of David. 1 O LORD, thy mercy, my sure hope, The highest orb of heaven transcends: Thy sacred truth's unmeasured scope Beyond the spreading sky extends. 2 Thy justice like the hills remains, Unfathom'd depths thy judgments are Thy providence the world sustains, The whole creation is thy care. 3 Since of thy goodness all partake, With what assurance should the just Thy shelt'ring wings their refuge make, And saints to thy protection trust Such guests shall to thy courts be led, To banquet on thy love's repast; And drink, as from a fountain's head, Of joys that shall for ever last. 5 With thee the springs of life remain, Thy presence is eternal day; D let thy saints thy favor gain, To upright hearts thy truth display. PSALM 31. From the xxxvii. Psalm of David. PART I. II. 2 But he was gone as swift as thought; And, though in every place I sought, No sign or track of him I found. 2 Observe the perfect man with care, And mark all such as upright are; Their roughest days in peace shall end While on the latter end of those Who dare GOD's sacred will oppose, A common ruin shall attend. 3 GOD to the just will aid afford, 1 THOUGH wicked men grow rich or The LORD will timely succor send, great, Yet let not their successful state Secure from danger and from want: Make his commands thy chief delight, And he, thy duty to requite, Shall all thy earnest wishes grant. In all thy ways trust thou the LORD, And he will needful help afford, To perfect every just design; He'll make like light, serene and clear, Thy clouded innocence appear, And as a mid-day sun to shine. With quiet mind on GOD depend, And patiently for him attend, Nor envy the success of crime; For God will sinful men destroy, Whilst they his presence shall enjoy, Who trust on him, and wait his time. THE good man's way is GOD's delight: He orders all the steps aright Of him that moves by his command; Though he sometimes may be distress'd, Yet shall he ne'er be quite oppress'd, For GOD upholds him with his hand. 2 With caution shun each wicked deed, In virtue's ways with zeal proceed, And so prolong your happy days; For GOD, who judgment loves, does still Preserve his saints secure from ill, While soon the wicked race decays. The upright shall possess the land, His portion shall for ages stand; His mouth with wisdom is supplied, His tongue by rules of judgment moves, His heart the law of GOD approves; Therefore his footsteps never slide. And from the wicked set them free. From the xxxviii. Psalm of David. 1 THY chast'ning wrath, O LORD, restrain, 2 My sins, which to a deluge swell, 3 But, LORD, before thy searching eyes The groanings of my burden'd soul 4 Forsake me not, O LORD, my GOD From the xxxix. Psalm of David. 1 LORD, let me know my term of days, How soon my life will end: The numerous train of ills disclose, Which this frail state attend. 2 My life, thou know'st, is but a span, But vanity appears. 3 Man, like a shadow, vainly walks, 4 Why then should I on worthless toys Shall ever, LORD, depend. 5 LORD, hear my cry, accept my tears, 6 O spare me yet a little time; My wasted strength restore, Before I vanish quite from hence, And shall be seen no more. From the xxv. Psalm of David. TO GOD, in whom I trust, I lift my heart and voice; O let me not be put to shame, Nor let thy foes rejoice. 2 Those who on thee rely, Be that the shameful lot of such 3 To me thy truth impart, And lead me in thy way, For thou art he that brings me help; 4 Thy mercies and thy love, 5 Let all my youthful crimes 6 His mercy and his truth The righteous LORD displays, 8 Through all the ways of GoD 9 Since mercy is the grace 11 For GOD to all his saints His secret will imparts, And does his gracious covenant write In their obedient hearts. 12 To Israel's chosen race Continue ever kind; And, in the midst of all their wants, Let them thy succor find. From the xxvii. Psalm of David. 1 WHOM should I fear, since GOD to re Is saving health and light? Since strongly he my life supports, 2 Henceforth within his house to dwell His wondrous beauty there to view, 3 For there I may with comfort rest, In that secure recess. 4 When us to seek thy glorious face Thou kindly dost advise; "Thy glorious face I'll always seek," My grateful heart replies. 5 Then hide not thou thy face, O LORD, Nor me in wrath reject; My God and Saviour, leave not him 6 Though all of nearest earthly ties 7 Instruct me in thy paths, O LORD, 8 I trusted that my future life Should with thy love be crown'd; * Extract from the Journal of the General Con. vention, 1832. "4. Resolved, As the sense and declaration of this Convention, that so much of the rubrics in the form of consecration of a church or chapel as requires the singing of Psalm 26, verses 6, 7, and 8,' will hereafter be duly complied with by singing verses 2 and 3, in the selection from the 26th Psalm, included in the Psalms in Metre authorized by these resolutions to be set forth." e to 1 From the xxix. Psalm of David. 1 YE that in might and power excel, Your grateful sacrifice prepare; GOD's glorious actions loudly tell, His wondrous power to all declare. 2 To his great Name fresh altars raise; Devoutly due respect afford; Him in his holy temple praise, Where he's with solemn state adored. 3 T is he that, with amazing noise, The watery clouds in sunder breaks; The ocean trembles at his voice, When he from heaven in thunder speaks. 4 How full of power his voice appears! With what majestic terror crown'd! Which from their roots tall cedars tears, And strews their scatter'd branches round. 5 GOD rules the angry floods on high; His boundless sway shall never cease; His saints with strength he will supply, And bless his own with constant peace.
