L'ENVOI.

UNFORBIDDEN FRUIT.

'Then Evangelist reached unto him a hand, wherein were some leaves from the tree of life.'

Come hither, friends, and eat!

Behold, this fruit is fair unto the eye,
To taste, to scent alike it is most sweet,
Take, then ye shall not die.

It grew upon a tree

That grows beside a blissful stream full-fed
From out the Rock that flows continually;

Its leaves are never shed.

Its fruitage, c'en its leaf,

Is healing to the nations, strife, and smart,
Is healing unto each that knows the grief
And plague of his own heart.
